Sidi, I get the impression you are itching to sell, i would love to be in the position where all of my shares are in profit or at least in profit for most of the time, the only way i can see how i to achieve this is sticking with a smaller number of good dividend paying shares that i want to hold and topping up when they drop below my average, but i have a few rotten apples in the mix i need to get rid of, hopefully at as low a loss as i can achieve

I think your strategy is very different, you try to buy when they are low then sell off as soon as possible when they rise a bit

just curious which method most people get the best return on

Sidi, so you have jumped ship?, i cant say i blame you, i wish i had done so a long time ago, i just can't bring myself to sell at a big loss at the moment, will i regret it who knows, the other thing i think about here is even if it does start rising, how quickly will it rise and by how much, and will it get left behind and continue to under perform compared to other shares

if only we knew all the answers

Gwm121, my 3 best performing shares are lgen international index/lgen global technology index and fundsmith not recommendations of course, because all you can ever go buy is past performance,but you may want to take a look, for myself i have 8 funds which are all in profit, and a selection of dividend paying shares, the difference here is some of the shares are currently in profit and some in loss, for this reason i favour a balance of shares and funds, as it's becoming more important for myself going into drawdown to preserve capital, i will still be holding on to my most reliable shares such as aviv/lgen/mng /lloyds/psn for dividend income and funds for growth

Thank you for your feed back guys, and apologise for going off topic, to be more precise the particular share i was talking about is Vodafone bought 7 years ago and it's dropped every year since and more recently dropping very quickly

every year i thought it might turn around, so kept holding on taking the dividends, it's very easy to get caught in these traps

One thing i have learnt from this, is if you have a good reliable shares like lgen/aviv that pays a good dividend without losing any of your capital, think very hard about selling and maybe end up with a dog

Cheers sidi, it's nice to know i'm not alone there, thankfully it's not one of my bigger holdings, the good thing is my portfolio on the whole, has been rising despite a couple of rotten eggs in the basket, hopefully a lesson learn't, but probably not ;-)

let's hope this little recent upturn will keep going for us all

Gwm121, I also hold/aviv/lgen/mng and unfortunately vod, I'm no expert for sure, but have you considered international funds as an addition to your sipp or indeed maybe making them the largest portion of your sipp, i will be retiring shortly and trying to make my sipp as well balanced as possible, and it's more about retaining capital for myself now

also there's no charges with hl for buying and selling funds, and easier to sell when you want to draw down

Thankfully up until now at least this has always come back good for me, but one thing i have a problem with, is what to do with a share that keeps dropping each year to the point, let's say your now in 40% loss and you have no idea whether it will come back good or keep dropping, do you cut your losses and get rid or hold on and hope it will get better

most people mean well on these boards, but i can't help thinking some are in denial and will say things like it's only a paper loss, so i will just keep on buying, but of course there's no guarantee it will ever come back good

I wish i had a crystal ball sometimes

RE: In the short term ,I am only interested in the share price if it reaches another purchasing level . I have no concern about a share price tomorrow, next week, next month, or at any time.

Maybe i'm the odd one out then, when i buy a share i just want it to go up and continue going up, so i can sell at a profit

Gutter,good choice when the interest rates are high, and you can't lose any money, not sure how long they will stay high for though

I like international funds as well, less risk than individual shares and they can grow very quickly when times are good

Gutter, you is very smart, what conclusion have you come to from your analysing, should i sell or buy more, my wife keeps telling me i should buy premium bonds, but i'm not sure what to do, and i gets upset if i lose money

Dan, There's only one thing that will stop the moaners, and that's a rising sp, I only wish jax would apply for the CEO job, he obviously feels he is more qualified and could do a better job. ha ha
