Casa, well done. I think you prove the point that any investment can be a good investment depending on when you buy and when you sell.

to think you can buy every share at the bottom and sell high and make a profit from any share you buy is nonsense as everyone knows, and if that's what he is planning on doing, the chances are he will be more likely to lose money than make any, sometimes the harder you try the more you can lose

zac_4 as you know i'm a big believer in having a good selection of funds to diversify a portfolio, and the historic figures look good, the only problem is there's is not much movement with the funds at the moment, and currently the dividend shares are more rewarding, if only we could predict what will happen in 2024

Casapinos, no it wasn't aimed at yourself in particular, just pointing out for every winner there is a loser, and most people who try to beat the markets lose, nobody really knows where the bottom or the top is, for instance you might have thought you got a good price before we got hit by high inflation and increasing interest rates, another good example is Vodafone, every year most people thought it had hit it's bottom, but it's continued to drop for the last 6 years, i think most people who bought shares a year or two ago will currently have a few rotten eggs in their basket, some posters like to brag about the ones they have made a profit on, but are less vocal about any stinkers,but good luck to you if you have made a good profit on all of your shares, one good thing is most shares have been rising the last few weeks inc. lgen, let's hope it can continue into 2024

Realist1, you buy low then wait for a while then sell high, very simple really it works every time didn't you know that? you will be a millionaire before you know it

Good evening sidi, yes of course that is something to think about, for myself i like to have as low an average as i can achieve on my shares by adding when it gets below my average, that way you are showing in profit more than your in loss, peace of mind if you like, back to your question for myself it would depend on the share price at the time, if it's no higher than say 260 by exdiv i would hold as it would be quite a lot below it's previous highs, and if inflation and interest rates drop and the economy starts to grow, then we could see the sp growing after you have sold, plus you have to take into account the charges, if on the other hand this was up around £3 it would be worth thinking about, buying and selling often works out badly for myself so i am a bit cautious about it, i would prefer to concentrate my time in dealing with my more disappointing shares than trying to fix something that's not broken, and is providing a good dividend yield with no loss of capital

Phyl, with HL if you select auto reinvest, it will auto reinvest all of your dividends for every share, you can't select individual shares, for that reason i pool all my dividends together then reinvest when i think the time is right, but good idea mate, i have some shares i wouldn't want to put another penny into

Gary, Daniel has never been known for his tactful posts, and we quite often argue and disagree, but i don't think either of us ever hold any grudges, we just agree to disagree on some things, but your right he is a grumpy git sometimes, investing should be fun, everyone is in a much better mood when the sp is going up though

Dan, their are negative and positive posters, i listen to all of them and keep an open mind that it can go either way, then you have the other posters who just like to wind us all up for a laugh, as long as you remind yourself that nothing anyone will say here will make the slightest bit of difference to the share price, then you can choose to either ignore them or react them, also you make your own choice what you want to believe in, those who say this is a no brainer or those who say it's going bust

for me, it's a case of seeing is believing, depending on whether the share price is going up or down, i'm just trying to build up my pension pot here in the best way i can and that's what really matters to me, and i'm always grateful for any advice i can get from other posters here

Sidi, my portfolio on the whole, which is my sipp and stocks and shares isa, is at the highest it's been for over a year, down to the fact all of my shares have been rising apart from Vodafone, in fact i think i will take a screenshot in case they all drop back down again, which could easily happen

Vodafone on the other hand is currently at a very low price, like others here i'm hoping this is the bottom and the only way is up, The reality though is nobody knows, and if it does go up by how much will it go up, more questions than answers i'm afraid, if only it was that easy we could all make a nice profit from everything we invested in

so all i will say is fingers crossed that this will be a better year for Vodafone holders, don't think giving up would be a very good option at these prices, so best of luck to all

I'm not asking very much from this share as i'm not a greedy person, i don't even want to make a profit, just want to reduce my losses, I was once told the stock market takes from the impatient and rewards the patient, well i have been very very patient Vodafone, so please give me my money back in 2024, jax i thought you might have cheered up a bit , didn't Santa bring you any Christmas presents ?

Gary59, good morning to you, I have a Sipp and stocks and shares ISA with Hargreaves, Like yourself have decided not to go down the Annuity route, as i would like to leave what ever money is remaining to my family

I currently have 60% of my portfolio in low cost tracker funds such as Fundsmith/legen international fund/lgen global technology to name a few, as i believe funds can be less Volatile than my individual shares and hopefully provide growth, having said that i realise in case of a market correction/market crash, they will go down just the same as anything else, so looking for something to give protection to part of my portfolio, any suggestions from you guys to give part protection in case the worst happens and available within HL would be appreciated

Hi Guys, very interesting subject, and agree with most that drawdown is a better option all round, the biggest worry though that most would be concerned about, is the possibility of a market crash such as what we had in 2008, the question i have to you all, is what is the best way of protecting your pension pot against such events

David, as long as you see it as up a year from now that's all that matters, I think most people would guess at this being around 270/280 by April, but who knows anything can happen

Zac, share price was 317 feb 2020 and 308 jan 22 after it recovered from the Pandemic, if inflation and interest rates drop i don't see any reason why it shouldn't get up there again, and don't forget about the dividends we are also collecting, as you know i have 8 funds that help to stabilize my pension pot and hopefully they will start adding growth again, but it also helps to have some reliable dividend shares for income when the funds are not performing very well

just my opinion of course, everyone has their own strategy's and long as the are working that's all that matters

Dan, well it's going in the right direction and that's good of course, let's hope the uptrend will keep going for us next year
