Patents are important of course but the bigger factor here I would argue is evidence. Other companies can copy the device but that doesn't give them evidence supporting claims about what their device does. Sure they would probably win some business without, marketing proficiency and allegiances to companies does often win more clinicians over than it justifiably should, but in an area such as cancer treatment more often than not the evidence of parsortix would win out over copy cats that lack evidence.

Qualified usually means confirmed interest based on info freely provided by the interested party. You don't bring a a company like AFC, that's involved in the revolution of an industry, to commercialisation based on small ad hoc sales, so on that basis I would assume in this case qualified also means that they meet the target customer criteria that AFC clearly have in mind.

Many of the competitors are looking to manufacture everything at Gigafactory themselves, like quantumscape, hence why the require much greater financial backing. Ilika aren't planning on manufacturing Goliath themselves at gigafactory scale. They plan on scaling up to several their pre-pilot line at UKBIC (recent APC grant to team up with comau on plans) and then licence out the tech for others to manufacture at the gigafactory scale.

I'm familiar with their letter dated June. It wasn't really about funding for ilika itself, it was about the entire SSB supply chain that will be required.

Ilika have a pretty decent bank balance from previous placing and they'll start generating more revenue when the increased stereax production comes on line by end of 21/early 22.
