I never invest with anything less than a 5-10 year timeframe in mind - if circumstances that impact the company change then I'll reassess but 5-10 years is the starting point. I don't buy with a specific exit price in mind (that doesn't mean I don't think about different scenarios), and I expect and accept that any investment I do buy will likely drop 25% or more on at least one occasion. The longer I hold the more times I would expect that to happen. Ultimately, my losses are limited to 100% of my investment whereas the upside is uncapped.

The key overarching question that I need to satisfy myself on before I invest in any small company is do I think it has the potential to grow into something very important that will benefit people in some way. I also need to believe that it could turn into a big independent company (which by default means sp would likely be multiples of what I bought in at). Obviously in the pharma/biotech space those that grow into big independent company's are outliers as buyouts are common place, but the possibility of being bought out is never part of my decision making. Ultimately, if a company is doing the right things and doing them well then it will always potentially attract the interest of others.

Yes I know michael, that it needs to be positive for it to be realised is a given and stating the obvious. However, If you re-read what I wrote you'll note I did cover myself on that front as I did say "...if it is positive it could/should push the company and SP onwards."

It is common and I don't see any reason why it isn't appropriate, it's simply used as a label under which fall factors that can lead to a rise in sp and the growth of a company. I'm sure DP and AS are optimistic, they wouldn't have invested decent skin in the game in the last placing if they weren't optimistic. The fact is though you don't have to try and link use of the word catalyst to confidence, you are choosing to do so. I personally think that's a great example of confirmation bias but that's just me.

For what it's worth, as far as I'm concerned using the word "catalysts" has nothing to do with confidence in outcome. It's not like it's an uncommon word in the world of biopharma/biotech. My take is it simply refers to something that is a growth driver (e.g. trial data) and that if it is positive it could/should push the company and SP onwards.

I'm long on 4D because I'm positive and hopeful, there are no guarantees though. If an investment was obvious and guaranteed to one person then it would be obvious and guaranteed to others and there's a high chance that that would already be baked into the SP making it a less attractive prospect, which clearly it isn't.

What's your rationale for thinking that only trading 10% doesn't make sense?

I firmly believe that no one can consistently time the market hence why I don't myself try and trade any amount. However, if I wanted to try giving it a go then keeping a core holding of say 90% and trading 10% on the margins seems like a perfectly reasonable strategy. Some of those 10% trades might pay off but if they don't you wouldn't be too badly burnt as you still have your core 90% long.

As for Sangi's supposed occasional deramping, on the basis of their posts that I've read over the last few months I disagree. There's a difference between being negative and being objective. I don't always agree with their opinion but there's nothing wrong with that. As far as I'm concerned they come across as objective rather than negative and certainly a lot more objective than some who post on here, which is a good thing.

Until the market starts valuing 4D even remotely fairly then it will remain fertile ground for shorting.

Ask the BOD - no one on here can speak for them on their financial state of affairs and commitments etc and speculation would be meaningless.

Robins, it's like asking if the theory behind everyday drug development doesn't work simply because a company has a drug fail in development. Far more drugs don't make it to market than do, there's no reason why drugs based on the microbiome should be any different in that regard.

One of the pro's of 4D is that they have more projects on the go than other microbiome companies and the data to date have been very positive.

Michael, I'm curious why you find the fact that it has been tweeted by 4d more encouraging than the article itself?

That sounds like some grade A emotional reasoning right there, which is never the best foundation when it comes to financial decision making.

Share prices go up and they go down. You can spend all day speculating and rationalising why or you can accept that uncertainty and volatility is inherent to investing, especially in small cap companies working to commercialise product, and give your investment the best hedge you can - time.
