Crl, I was being economical with the truth when I said I'm probably lucky to be comfortable with uncertainty. Genetic contribution aside it's not luck, I purposely work at it. It’s all too easy to get in our own way, investing mimics general life in that respect. Mental attributes such as those that play a part in our propensity for fear and worry aren’t fixed. We might all start at a different places but we can all learn, train, change and or improve them. What’s often the hardest part is accepting that we can, especially when doing so necessitates consistent and deliberate effort and work that is sometimes going to be hard and uncomfortable.
At the end of the day we aren’t force to invest and we don’t do it unknowingly, it’s a conscious decision. So the obvious immediate answer to your belief that worry isn’t something that some people can prevent, well when it comes to investing in the stock market, it is preventable. They can choose not to invest in it. Plenty of people who are fortunate to have the means to invest in the markets choose not to do so for that very reason, irrespective of whether it will be likely be good or bad for their wealth.
Assuming someone prone to overly worry is going to invest in the markets though then my first question would be what work and what strategies, practical and cognitive, have they done and put in place to help themselves. My sense is that a lot of people haven't or where they have they've done minimal.
