Oh, I don't know.
Maybe for the prevention of rickets in children; and the prevention of osteoporosis, osteopenia & osteomalacia with their accompanying fragility fractures in adults, in particular the elderly, with post-menopausal women, and anyone who isn't caucasian, particuarly at risk. I mean, it's not like a fractured hip has over 50% mortality, even with optimal treatment after the fact - oh hang on, yes it does.
And all for a measly £1.50 per person per year across the population as a whole, or 0.08% of the total NHS budget.
This is not an inefficient use of resources, and anyone claiming so is either selling something, on a propaganda exercise, or has been conclusively brainwashed by the tabloid press.

@bullraider, what are you trying to say, that you haven't had covid or you haven't got any friends?
Some reading material for twosheds
Backed by science.
If you haven’t had Covid yet, in news this week, a top doctor has a theory as to why that may be.
Posting on Facebook, the medical professional, who is also vice president of the Korean Vaccine Society, claimed that if you’ve so far managed to avoid the infectious virus, it’s likely because you have no friends.
In his post, he said: “The adults who have not yet been infected with COVID-19 are those who have interpersonal problems.”
Ma Sang-hyuk has since deleted the post and retracted his somewhat controversial comments, sharing that they were meant “metaphorically”, claims news site Daily. Naturally, his comments quickly went viral and divided opinion.
This comes as new strains Deltacron and Stealth Omicron cause a rise in cases globally. (Read up on the Omicron symptoms, here).
Expanding on his initial comments after the post went viral, he said: “[My post] emphasised how difficult it is for anyone to avoid the virus in a situation where there is a high rate of confirmed cases in the area.”
However, many have pointed out that they caught Covid despite not seeing friends, with others quick to share that the reason they’d avoided the virus was not that they hadn’t seen friends, but been generally careful to wear a mask, wash their hands regularly, social distance when seeing others, and so on.
One Consultant ICU Physician – Dr Rosie Baruah – pointed out that, following Sang-hyuk’s reasoning, not having caught Covid-19 yet must mean she’s not pulling her weight on the busy ICU ward that she works on.
On the other hand, some Twitter users shared that they agreed with the doctor’s sentiment – that they believe they haven’t caught the virus so far because they’ve limited their social interaction over the past few years.
However, the majority of responses marked the doctor’s comments as insensitive.
If you haven’t had Covid yet, doctors share 6 reasons why
As the Twitter responses have highlighted, it seems a bit silly to say that not having friends is the reason you haven’t had Covid yet – which is why we asked two medical professionals for their take, instead.
If you haven’t had Covid yet, below is what science indicates may have helped you avoid it so far. Do note: these are the opinions of the doctors we asked, and while backed with medical research, don’t conclusively confirm why you may not have had it yet.

1. Air pollution in your area
According to Doctor Sam Watts, an evidenced-based Ayurvedic consultant and founder of Mind Body Medical & Ayurvedic Mentor Membership, published evidence has observed a clinically significant relationship between Covid infectivity and air pollution. “For example, evidence shows that Italian cities that exceed accepted air particle pollution rates for more than 80 days per year experienced a significantly gre
In more good news, Mr. Algorithm seems to have taken a day off, wonder why? …..
Hi two sheds.... The money spent on reasearch is not wasted.... Money spent elsewhere through this period has been.... Primerdesign reasearch
It seems that my information about Vitamin D trials has brought numerous experts out of the woodwork. I prefer to believe the leading professors in this subject rather than a handful of AIM bulletin board posters. My gripe was actually nothing to do with Vitamin D supplements, it was about the NHS wasting money like it has gone out of fashion, and I think the time has come for parliament to do something about it.
:) Anyway I take spray vitamin D daily , not much sunshine here :)
Highly likely?I see you work with "professors", so did I.Many of them are frauds despite their qualifications,I was a professional research biochemist that's all.
As all scientists agree any qualitative research like this is statistical in essence and does not take account of inherent factorial bias.
Don't "diss me" please.
Adult doses (of vitamin D3) should be 4000 - 6000 IUs, with zinc, and VitaminK2... For best conversion and results
Remember that trials can be tweeked and set up in a way to fail, or to give a result to fit a narrative.
Without going down a conspiracy rabbit hole (oops too late), vitamin D is not what the pharmaceutical industry wants you to know about. A cheap and readily available supplement that could prevent cancer, diabetes, etc.. The list is endless... Oh yeah, and prevent severe symptoms of diseases like covid.
@bullraider, I think it is highly likely that the professor who lead the trial at the University where I work knows a bit more about Vitamin D than you personally.
Two sheds, if the trial had been successful it would have saved huge sums of money and potentially many lives.
Prefer the Lancet or BMJ for peer reviewed articles on trials, the Daily Mail is headline grabbing drivel and always biased.
Immune cell behaviour... Mushrooms
Yes twosheds, don't believe all you read in the daily sh*te!
Vitamin D IS significant,it is a basic primer of the immune system, the NHS is doing it's best by giving out VitD.
Perhaps you should read the latest research by marie clair on this topic. Apparently air pollution is the main factor here, also regular exercise, fresh air and attention to the behaviour of humans.I'm glad I made 5 gallons of elderberry wine last year!
@bobminor, I agree entirely that the medical staff are fantastic but it seems there are a lot of bad apples at the top of the tree!
The reason why people evolved to have white skin was to convert sunlight in summer into vitamin D (the body can only make vitamin d when the sun is high in the sky, (typically between 11 - 2)), and store it in fat cells ready to use in winter months.
Vitamin D is vital in preventing all manner of diseases, and is the most effective way in prolonging our lives.
Look into it!
Some say it shouldn't even be called a vitamin.
Unfortunately people with darker skins (who have typically lived closer to the equator, and have evolved to make small amounts due to all year round high sun) and live in northern latitudes, have a severe lack of vD.
Really quite inefficient but the heart is in the right place.
(heart being the medical staff)
