RE: IG Shorts23 Aug 2023 12:25
Me too Xen, I have no ability to short, which in a bull market is ok but a frustration in a bear one.
Also shorting in stocks is not a popular as I think many here suppose. A, its much harder to have the facilities to do and B, the risk of shorting is higher than the risk of going long as the loss on a going long is limited, but the loss on a short is unlimited.
Further Shorting is typically much more short term because of the risk profile and also because its likely a specific event is going to cause the fall, maybe expected poor results, or an expected loss of a contract or whatever.
So given the risks and time constraints, anyone who shorts a stock has probably done a lot more research and is more confident that the bet will pay off
(Plus just the mechanics that Stops in the market don't work on shares like they do in indices and the the like. If you buy at 15p and have a stop at 13p but the news is bad and the stock falls straight to 5p means it simply bypasses the 13p stop and you get Stopped out at 5p!)
Anyway, for all those reason I personally don't put much store by Shorts, They are either done by people who don't understand risk and the implications or the fall in the SP is just normal buying and selling.
Imo, dyor
