Tony, I used to work for national grid and the big worry around substations was the quality of Transformer cooling oils and there were processes in place to maintain/change to keep them from blowing up.

So while Jon Pettigrew [ my old boss] can say he cannot remember this type of event happening before in 30 plus years , I am sure there are many Engineers working there now and previously who would be able to say 'but throughout that time we knew of the risk'. Key issue - was maintenance up to date.

Jack, I think you are in part correct but there will be DD required by lenders and imv the results of the 'audit' will be needed for them to be satisfied - that takes time because the audit mob are financially incented to spend lots of time .

If you can see a water tight case , present it to Harcus Parker who deal with such things. The clear issue will be how much they can recover , which needs to be tens of millions of lost shareholder money, to make it a viable case. Set up a shareholder action group and total up losses is my advice.

When i worked at national grid the worry about substations was water vapour in the transformer oil and the potential to cause fires . However , notwithstanding the possibility of a fault there was an incident about 3 years ago when one of the interconnectors was shut down for a problem at a substation - but it never made the press. Given our crazy market and prices for electricty we import around 10% of our electricty from France so we are especially vulnerable to sabotage. We really should keep the gas supply system as our main source of energy imv on a security of supply basis , if nothing else.

So once we all rely on electricity for our heat, light , power and transport , how many substations would Putin have to sabotage in mid winter to bring us to our knees?
