It's not that postal/home testing isn't ideal, it's unworkable.

You can guarantee that within 2 weeks the system will collapse and people (in their thousands) will lose their flights because of carrier delays and processing delays.

Go to the review sites and check out the reviews for the testing providers in December last year. Thousands of disgruntled passengers who missed flights because they didn't get results returned before their flights. Losing thousands spent on holidays. Passenger volume will be an order of magnitude greater this summer.

Back in December when travel was open for a brief window and passenger volumes were relatively low postal PCR testing was an unmitigated disaster. The providers simply couldn't handle the volume.

I physically travelled to a lab in barnard castle to get my test done and it still took 44 hours to get a result. Thousands missed flights using the postal option due to logistical issues.

What is needed is labs or processors physically located at embarkation points capable of doing a quick turnaround. Anything less is a recipe for disaster for travellers this summer.

Nobody is going to commercially provide either PCR or lft testing for 22 quid. There's no profit to be made at that price point with either. The British public are going to have to suck it up at a higher price point, we've had 2 decades of unbelievably cheap air travel - people have been spoilt, recreational air travel is a luxury not a basic human right.

Make no mistake, the low cost carriers would fly with no protocols in place and dump the problem in the lap of British taxpayers if they could. There is so much pent up frustration that people will be willing to pay for PCR if it meant they'd get away this summer. How about easyjet buy themselves some Q32s and offer PCR at cost to their travellers if they're that concerned. They won't because it's easier to pass the buck and let someone else deal with the fallout.
