Cheap, absolutely agree with you mate, past performance does not guarantee future performance, and that's why i'm still 50% invested in UK dividend shares, trying to predict what will happen in the next 5 years is beyond me, you never know maybe even Vodafone might shock us by changing direction and the mng sp has jumped up several times on rumours of a take over, maybe the next time it will be a genuine one, but either way let's hope we will all benefit from the dividends and hopefully a rising sp

Cheapsharesboy, The perfect share for me is one that pays a good dividend and an increasing capital, currently i only have one share that matches that description, and that's Aviva, helped by the fact i bought the shares in the 380s several years ago, unfortunately most of my other shares are giving dividends in one hand and then taking it away with capital erosion, quite happy with this share though as i have an average of 2.02 and hopefully we will see it near the 240 mark by next exdiv

one other point is my international funds, such as legal & general international index, legal & general USA index, fundsmith, just to mention a few of them, have a growth of over 80% over the last 5 years, my portfolio is a split 50/50 UK shares and international funds, and over the last 5 years the international funds have out performed my UK shares, but which will be the most rewarding in the next 5 years remains to be seen

GLA, and hopefully we will get a Santa rally

90p will do me then 50% will be sold off instantly, maybe more, let's hope there's not more disappointment

Hi all ,just bought in here @ 129.98p and hoping of course that it doesn't drop much lower as I've just gone back under water with persimmon, but mainly here for the dividend as i'm thinking it might be more reliable than psn, time will tell

Hi Mole, I hope so, i had around 80% growth from my USA funds over the last 5 years, if that continues i will be very pleased, but i have a 50/50 split between USA funds and UK dividend shares, so hoping we see a better performance from both sides of the Pond next year

Vodafone does seem to be improving, hopefully we we will see the the sp rising in the new year, by how much remains to be seen, would be happy it could get back to my last top up of 86p, so wish us luck

I can only speak for myself but most of my UK shares have been a bit disappointing this year with the exception of Aviva,

another poster mentioned go USA, well my USA funds have done really well the last 5 years, but that doesn't mean they will do as well over the next 5 years, maybe 2025 will be a better year for UK shares and hopefully Vodafone will start moving towards and above 80p for us, i can dream

Jesteh, that is always the difficult bit where to reinvest that money right now to get a better and faster return, taking into account you also need a good entry point, any ideas guys?

I am hoping this share has a bit more upwards travel in it, but by how much and how long it will take I've no idea

CPT, just get real please, nobody minds a share price dropping short term because it can give you an opportunity to reinvest your dividends at a lower price or if you want to top up, but in the longer term a share that pays a good dividend with no loss of capital or an increasing capital is always going to come out on top against a share where your capital continues to get eroded, there is never a guarantee that a share price will rise again, we just hope that it will, you don't want to keep collecting dividends just to make up for capital erosion, i'm not saying that will ever be the case here, but i'm sure you get the point, to say the share price doesn't matter is nonsense, just ask a long time Vodafone holder if you want confirmation

I've been invested here for many years and hopefully that will continue, but i was a lot happier about it when i was getting a good dividend plus an increasing share price

I don't think anyone expects this to be a growth share, but make no mistake about it the share price definitely always matters, you are not getting 9% yield if your getting capital erosion, it's ok for anyone who's bought at the bottom price to say the share price doesn't matter, but i'm sure there's plenty here who have payed closer to £3 for this share, to them it will most certainly matter, also with a dropping sp there's more chance of a dividend cut, saying that i still think this is a good investment, and hopefully we will see a decent increase in the sp by April

Dan, the good thing is it seems to have reached it's bottom since the results and moving up a bit, if the merger goes ahead it may give it a bit of a boost, fingers crossed

Hi Soton, good for you mate and i hope you have a very enjoyable retirement, but have no fear Kier will still be after your money, it won't be long before the state pension is taxable as the threshold has not been increased, it's good to have a solid income share like this one in your portfolio though and let's hope lgen's sp recovers

I meant house builders shares have tanked not house prices

Dan, I don't know about 20 years time, i'm more concerned about the next 5 years, this government has let down a lot of it's voters, house prices have tanked big time since the budget now that theirs less chance of larger interest cuts, businesses will suffer due to higher taxes and most surprising from a labour government is their attack on pensioners who will soon be paying tax on their state pension, I've done a 50/50 split between US funds and UK shares, but currently the US is still winning, should it swing the other way i don't mind, but can't see it happening anytime soon, i might be wrong , but let's hope Vodafone can start climbing for us in the new year

Conger2, i'm in a similar situation to yourself, soon to fully retire and chosen a sipp rather than an annuity, obviously the biggest concern in doing so is trying to protect your capital in an unstable stock market, so i have been trying to diversify in the best way i know of, but i'm most definitely no expert, my sipp is currently 50% in international funds for growth and 50% dividend shares for income, lgen/aviva/lloyds/mng/psn and vod for anyone else in a similar situation it would be good to hear any suggestions
