The Great EU Vaccine Blunder12 Jan 2021 23:55
Not sure if this was already covered off or not but I just watched the Newsnight article on the EU vaccine roll out. Basically, it is a monumental Fck up.
To sum up: -
Ursula von der Leyen stated at the offset that she was speaking as one voice for 27 member countries for max buying power and was ordering over a billion vaccine doses for EU member states.
However, this massive order was biased in favour of the French Pharma giant Sanofi where they ordered 300 m vaccines and emerging German Pharma group CureVac where they secured 225m vaccine doses these making up half the orders, with the rest spread over smaller companies however the top two firms proved ultimately to having little chance of producing a working vaccine in the first half of 2021, The Sanofi vaccine for example will not be out until the end of end of 2021.
They have been back onto Pfizer for more stocks but are effectively behind other countries that already ordered leading some states like Germany to try and bypass the EU to try and source their own vaccine and compete against the EU. The EU is now significantly delayed on its program.
As at today, vaccinations carried out are Germany 600,000, France 140,000, and Netherlands 35,000 hence this is going to take most of 2021 at best.
In addition, differing rates of states getting vaccines also opens a massive vulnerability gap regarding travel within the EU space. Different member countries in different lock downs at different times with vastly different levels of control.
Progress is being made but significantly slower than first considered.
This obviously a total disaster of the EUs making. What it does mean however is that this is further supporting evidence on top of what we already know for continued high volume testing throughout this year and 22.
Any possible suggestion of testing winding down towards the end of 2021 is totally out the question.
