Opium, Shorting started much before MRW started selling and leasing back. In fact I think they are close to finalising this aspect of this part of the process which was £1.1Bn or less.
Whilst you are correct its not the best long term strategy, at the time, the short term was more of an issue. Tesco are now following MRW trying to increase freeholds. Should they wish to continue selling more after current stated intention then I would be more concerned.
I am not sure if the payables days are correct, I have not checked but if the traders are happy with the terms dealing with MRW that fine. Again Tesco rode rough shot over many traders, a thing Dave Lewis has corrected.
As for accounting scandals, so far the only thing I am aware of is a data breach issue for which a individual member of staff was up in front of the beak and got eight years I think. Still staff are suing MRW in a lawsuit, which IMO is a difficult area. How can you prevent any individual releasing data maliciously?
Then again maybe I'm not the best person to listen too ..... I hold CLLN another well shorted stock that err got well shorted!
