Hi any tax experts on here !!

Just wondering how to treat the c £1.02 payment per share that Aviva distributed in mid 2022 just before they reduced the number of shares in issue by 24%. They took both actions separately so I feel the Return is a Return of Capital which reduces the base purchase cost of shares held, so no tax to pay immediately (deferred if any future CGT liability) and affects any future CGT liability when the shares are sold. I believe definitely not an Income Distribution, but am a little uncertain as to whether the Return could be deemed to be the sale of the 24%, so if one had 1,000 shares that a Return of c £1,020 could be deemed to be a sale of 240 shares ?

Any help appreciated (without liability for my actions !! ).

In all fairness jakeyork Aviva show a summary of main terms on all motor and house contracts that I receive. Their multi-page terms are governed by all the laws, many of which exist because others found loopholes in the previous laws in the past, and insurance companies suffered losses, and even where using the loopholes meant unfairness to the insurance companies, eg verbally told something without proof. There was much more fairness in the past, the world has become a much more dishonest place and therefore all this small print terms and conditions.

Keeppluggingaway, no one is forcing people to buy petrol, diesel or gas. If something is viewed as too expensive, then don't buy it. Use public transport, walk, or don't travel. That'll bring the price down, simple Damamd and Supply. Re the criminal EPL, the high level of that encourages higher pump prices. The UK Govt has severely punished some of the Oil and Gas cos working in North Sea, and that cannot be morally right, eg HBR.
