A tax hike on APD? So shutting down airlines for 2 1/2 years wasn't enough? Now they are desperately trying to get back on their feet, let's punch them in the genitals (again). If this is true, there is clearly another agenda here.

Despite the somewhat flaccid performance here yesterday, thanks to others such as EZJ, Rolls, and (ironically) Lloyds, it was still a really good day for me - as it hopefully was for others. Probably asking too much to have 2 consecutive positive days, but we travel in hope. I just hope that Jezza Hunt doesn't come up with something unpleasant to ruin the mood.
Still, as we exit the trenches and head into battle again, it's reassuring to know that our magnificent leaders have nothing but our best interests at heart.

As far as the budget goes, with a long history of this share being one step forwards and two back, I wouldn't be surprised if Jezza says or does something that will wipe out todays marginal gains, and send the whole market south. Hope I'm wrong.

As far as banks go, I was getting twitchy reading about " a run on the banks", so just took £50 out of the cashpoint (Lloyds).
Hope that doesn't crash the whole system.

fordm -spot on. Have you read anything by Matthew Desmond? He's a Pulitzer prize winning American sociologist, and his new book is called 'Poverty, by America'. and deals with some of the things you touched upon - ie. poverty as a policy.
You can read some excerpts on The New York Times online. I'll be buying it when it's released in paperback. Powerful stuff.
As for the situation here, I see that others such as EZJ and Rolls are up a little today, while (yet again) we are down. Depressing. Beachy Head gets closer by the day.

So the DOW and NASDAQ are now both ahead on the day, while the FTSE is down some 2%,, and shares like IAG/EZJ are down 3.5%/4%.
If someone could explain this to me, I would be grateful.

Hoping for a bounce back in the share price here, in order to avoid turning Beachy Head into a new version of Jonestown, with dozens of depressed IAG shareholders flinging themselves lemming-like over the cliff.
I suggest we meet in a local boozer (The Tiger in East Dean is lovely) where we can all huddle around a computer screen, desperately hoping for a last minute reprieve from the market. Sort of like a coastal, alcohol-soaked version of death row.

Also be interesting to see how the SVB thing plays out over the pond. Will there be more panic, and a sell-off and market drops, or will it calm down/bounce back? And how much of that will impact over here? Questions, questions... what an interesting g week it could prove to be.

Firstly, an apology to Warren Buffett for misspelling his surname yesterday. By omitting the second 't' I inadvertently turned him into a self-service meal, which he clearly isn't. Sorry.
As for this latest banking debacle, please don't reference Lehman Brothers, or 2008. I literally cannot take another blow after the last few years of turmoil (Brexit/ Covid /Omicron/lockdowns/Ukraine war/energy prices/cost of living/political upheaval etc. etc.)
Like a punch-drunk boxer clinging to the ropes, I'm one punch away from being out for the count. A repeat of 2008 will have me getting a taxi to Beachy Head. Let's hope it doesn't come to that.

fordm - was in a supermarket in a slightly dodgy area of a local town the other day, and almost bumped into a family group who looked, quite literally, like they had just walked off the set of 'Deliverance'. Was tempted to say something like "you got a real perdy mouth, boy...", but decided it might be ill-advised.
