Quite a spike just now at 13;30 - not sure what caused that. Be interesting to see where we are a week from now, after the latest figures. I believe EZJ also have figures out the week after that, so hopefully we'll have a clearer picture of the whole sector. Fingers crossed (how's that for a scientific approach).
PS. As for that other thing - congratulations to tricky - spot on. Which is extraordinarily depressing, I have to say. Good job I am nowhere near Beachy Head just now - intend to drown my sorrows in a vat of Smirnoff.
Cheers CK. Oyster Bay is good stuff. Unfortunately, while you might get a bottle in the supermarket for £9, in the pub it's more likely to be that price per glass, and I generally prefer to do my drinking in a social setting (although I am at home having a sneaky vodka and coke right now). Still, with my shares, here and elsewhere, doing rather nicely just now, I figure I can afford it. Plus which, it is my birthday over the weekend, and I generally feel the need to anaesthetise myself (more than usual) at ticking another year off my all-to-brief time on this planet. Plus which, it's yet another year where Kylie has failed to recognize my potential as a partner, and as the solution to her problematic love life.
Dow and Nasdaq both had a strong finish, with airlines up about2%. If that rubs off here tomorrow am.- and assuming no Friday sell-off before the long weekend, we could head into the weekend on a really positive note, in which case I may upgrade from Moretti to a cheeky NZ sauvignon. That said, the FTSE has been on a roll lately, so I can see some kind of profit-taking sell-off tomorrow. Just depends on how big an impact that has here.
Hitman - I had never heard of her previously, but having just checked her out on-line, I can empathise with your predicament. Unfortunately, my powers of influence mostly don't seem to be as effective on the fairer sex (although it did, unbelievably, work on one notable occasion); I will, however, do my best for you. I have also put in a request for 181 here on May10th, not wishing to be too greedy. Let's see how that goes.
Fordm - very true, and more than a little depressing. Reminds me of that old adage about people who crave power should never be allowed anywhere near it. Also can't help wondering if the world would be a safer, slightly happier place if there were more women in charge, as opposed to unhinged (mostly short) men. Or does that adage I mentioned apply equally to women?
Seen quite a few articles lately about the possible abolition of stamp duty on UK shares. I know we only pay 0.2 % here, but I'm sure most of us have investments elsewhere, which attract that rate, and it's definitely a big deterrent to investing here in the UK, as opposed to other countries that don't have that same level of taxation. It's definitely part of the reason for the poor performance of the LSE compared to other markets, and a disincentive to investment in this country.
On a personal level, I'm sure it would save myself, and many other small investors here, a packet. Let's hope it happens (if not a complete abolition, a reduction at least). On a broader level, I have seen many economists say that it is the single biggest thing our government could do to encourage inward investment, Given the staggering level of incompetence (corruption?) of our current administration, I am not overly optimistic. Then again, these days I rarely am.
Fordm - These are TV dramas , as opposed to Soap Operas. and Kylie (aka. the future Mrs Bobbins), was in "Neighbours", not "Home and Away" - which did include such lovely ladies as Holly Vallance.
The fact that I am aware of such things is a sad indictment of my lifestyle. Still, at least I know that Rwanda is not in the Democratic Republic of Congo (Question Time last night). Embarrassing, and an indictment of our current political class.
Thanks Tricky. Still waiting to hear from KM.
Another rollercoaster day. How long before there are rides at funfairs and theme parks named "THE IAG", which are so spectacularly terrifying (featuring particularly vertiginous drops) that the few (unhinged) people brave enough to give it a go, end up staggering away, ashen-faced and covered in vomit, swearing that they won't go near it ever again. But, of course, like a junkie on the pipe, you'll find them queuing up again the next day for another hit.
PS - the only thing that goes up in a straight line is my overdraft and blood pressure.
Apologies for not responding earlier, but I had quite a nasty argument with my laptop, so was frozen out. What can I say? I am truly humbled to be the recipient of this highly prestigious award (again). Thanks to all who voted for me/ recommended. my post last Friday, which fuelled my late charge to the title. Thanks to Skindle for overseeing the whole process, and commiserations to Casio-kid, who I understand was runner up. Thanks to my parents (obvs.), and the dinner lady from my old school. Without them, none of this would have been possible. I intend to put the trophy on my mantelpiece, in-between last years trophy, and my framed picture of Kylie in her gold hotpants.
fordm - Kylie can wrap her tiny hands around my "trophy" anytime.
mararab - not really sure any more - bought and sold here so often i have lost track. My main holding pre covid was IAG, and failure to appreciate the severity of what was coming pretty much wiped me out. I wrote that money off. That was before covid (BC). After covid (AC), I guess my average is probably about 165. I am actually deeper into EZJ now, and they have been good to me.
Anyway - thanks again.
Hopefully, with the Middle East tensions (at least temporarily) abated, we will have a good week. I'm hoping for high 170's by next Friday. Then again. I'm also hoping to sleep with Kylie Minogue, and win the lottery, by next Friday.
fordm - nice to have you back - it's been rather quiet without you. Sounds like a nice trip you had - I aspire to your lifestyle. As for the POTY title, I was ready to concede to Casio-kid, but my post last Friday (now 21 recommends - just saying) has brought me back into the game. I do believe that Skindle ( as chairman of all things POTY related) will be the final arbiter of this award. The tension is unbearable.
