Been plenty of talk about "peace plans" between Russia and Ukraine over the last 4 years - never going to happen, because Putin doesn't want peace. Neither does Netanyahu, and I don't think Trump does. He might want a capitulation, but I don't see why Iran would do that now. They may be losing from a strictly military perspective, but from every other angle they seem to be doing rather well. As for the Straits of Hormuz - why would you give up your TRUMP card. Ha ha ha...

Hi Mike - you are clearly one of the most balanced, considerate posters here, and your posts reflect an intelligent perspective, whether people agree with it or not (I do). |Anyway, Trump has crossed a line now - I will put up with most things, but he has launched an attack on Bruce Springsteen. Apparently he is a "loser". His go-to insult for anyone who disagrees with him. Beyond pathetic. And he needs to be careful here - Bruce is a genuine blue-collar hero to tens of millions of Americans.

So Trump's response is that of a 10 year old in the playground. It's beyond ridiculous. The man is little more than a polished gangster. History will (hopefully) judge him harshly.

mike - i agree that there will be some kind of "boots on the ground" mission this weekend. probably kharg island, which is a handy negotiating tool, assuming they can take it, given that iran has probably seen this coming. trump either views this as a short-term negotiating weapon, or is prepared to enter another vietnam.

MikeS02 - your synopsis at 1325 was excellent, and while it's impossible to be certain of anything as far as Trump is concerned, I think you have a good chance of being bang on the money. This weekend is going to be a twitchy time for us investors, but whichever way things break, hopefully the overall picture will be clearer by this time next week. Or maybe not.

I watched the Hegseth press conference earlier, and it is quite terrifying. These people have zero connection with reality - they are just part of the Trump cult, and will say anything to keep their jobs. Stepford wives springs to mind.

Also, just to be clear, I intend to buy my sold shares back, it's just a matter of when, and how much, and I am still holding (by my meagre standards) a fair few. For me, I think it's called wanting to have your cake and eat it -posher people would probably call it "hedging your bets".

Dumped quite a few yesterday -- selling at 866 hurt, but nervous about the coming weekend. There's increasing noise now about jet fuel supplies running low, especially with this weekend being one of the busiest of the year; will airlines have to start cancelling flights? Also, a 3 day weekend in the US (4 for us) so if Trump is set on some kind of troop deployment, (which seems inevitable) it will almost certainly be while the markets are closed for the holiday.

At this point it it is all guesswork, until the smoke clears (literally and metaphorically) from the M/E situation. When will this nightmare end?

Trump's very own counter-terrorism chief (Joe Kent), a die-hard Republican and Trump supporter, resigned because there was no imminent threat. Do you know better than him? And the idea that Iran would somehow launch a strike (ballistic or nuclear) against the USA is ridiculous. And you can't really blame them for building up weapons to defend against exactly what has happened. Don't understand your point about Qatar/Bahrain, and military collapse either.

I've said it before, but it's worth repeating - I have no time for the Iranian leadership, and if they could be removed, and seamlessly replaced with a more civilised government, then I would be totally in favour. That can't and won't happen here, so all you are left with is the current catastrophe. Anyway, according to Trump, at various points, all of Iran's capabilities have been destroyed. Except they clearly haven't. The man is genetically incapable of telling the truth. Just look how he behaves and speaks - he is clearly unhinged,, and has no clue what he is doing. You don't drown quickly if you enter quicksand - it happens gradually - Vietnam/ Afghanistan (amongst others),anyone? A land invasion, which now looks inevitable, will just lead to a long-term guerilla warfare scenario, reminiscent of Vietnam, and disastrous for everyone. Will America never learn? Clearly not. A truly epic f**k-up.

Anyway, Pogo - in the interests of fairness, I do agree with your comments on industrial decline, and reliance on overseas energy etc.

Trump won't call it a war, because that would require Congressional approval, so he refers to it as "a military operation". Sounds remarkably similar to Putin's "special military operation". And how's that going? He thought it would be a couple of weeks, and here we are 4 years later. This could easily go that way - Trumps ego is so gargantuan that he can't face having to back down. Who cares how many lives are lost, or what damage is done to the global economy, when one narcissistic megalomaniacs pride is at stake. My only hope is that he does back down, but just lies through his teeth to somehow turn it into a "victory". Shouldn't be a problem - he lies as easily as he breathes.

Putin and Trump - two sides of the same coin, hence the mutual respect/affection. Maybe they are having it away in private. Nothing surprises me any more. I loathe them both.
