How is Starmer going to afford the nationalization of the Utility companies
...........
When has Keir Starmer/Labour said he was going to nationalise the utility companies? The last I heard he ruled it out...
Some might have to be nationalised and Thames Water, I'm looking at you, thanks to their inept management, but that's not the same as forcibly nationalising them.
A Labour government will I hope provide a better regulatory environment to force the utilities to invest more of their profits in their infrastructure and stop them from price gouging.
Shazbot, I don't think many are in disagreement, also Starmer is just giving lip service.
As for who's paying for it? We all are and always will be as the politicians get brown envelopes. They 'cap' the price then return that lost revenue in the form of subsidies. We, as the consumer, will always foot the bill.
Capitalism when we need help, socialism when they need help.
Not wanting to start an argument but 1. How is Starmer going to afford the nationalization of the Utility companies - the cupboards are bare, and it's you or me and our taxes that will pay for that, and 2. It's worth remembering how inefficient the Utility services were when they were run by local govt organizations in the past, I know as I started in the gas industry in the 80's and they couldn't punch their way out of a paper bag. Stricter regulation and a cap on profits and mandated investment is whats required, not nationalization...
Starmer is just a watered down Tory. Corbyn had his detractors but nationalising the utlilities and taxing the rich more makes sense.
Fordm,
We are in total agreement.
How do we change this situation for the better is the question for the UK, and most of rest of the world for that matter.
"Unfortunately"? Count your blessing that it will not be a Corbyn government, whatever happens."

JC after the Salisbury poisoning suggested that the evidence for Russian involvement should be presented to Russia for their comment. I guarantee they would have laughed in his face if he'd done that.
The problem is that he's too much of an idealist, in power people like that get trapped between their ideals and cold reality. I dread to think what state Ukraine would be in now had he been PM. Trying to negotiate with Russia would have allowed them to keep the tanks rolling.
I'm not a great fan of nuclear weapons - if we ever have a WWIII where they get used there'll be no tactical element in how they get deployed, it'll be armageddon, but I'm happy we have a strong defence, Corbyn as PM would have left us too weak both militarily and diplomatically.
Etank. thanks.
From where I sit, I agree, Corbyn had his ideologies (I have read Corbyn's journey all the way back to the coups in Chile and him reporting on them), Truss, she had competition from a head of lettuce.
But all I see from Rishi and Starmar is personal greed. But governments around the globe currently are out to serve themselves not the people they are supposed to serve. On a personal level, I hate what has happened to the UK, corruption is rife in government, cronyism is running amuck. Not much better where I am tbh.
Fordm,
From where I am looking Corbyn is the direct counterpart to Liz Truss - both ideologes, that pursue their convictions with total disregard of what the country needs. The UK, are arguably, in a pretty poor spot at the moment, from a social, economic, health, etc aspect. What we need are a government that have the wellbeing of the whole country at heart- and are not just there to further their own advancement. Somehow, with the current setup I doubt that we will get that - regardless of which party forms the next government. The whole system needs a good clear out. Dare I suggest to move the electoral system to proportional representation to turn up the heat?
"Unfortunately"? Count your blessing that it will not be a Corbyn government, whatever happens."
Can someone enlighten why this is a concern? Genuinely curious why so many against the idea. I have no real skin in the game as I do not live in the UK nor do I plan on ever doing again.
But what I have seen is that the tories have killed the UK, cannot blame Labour as they have had no control of government since 2010? (I believe that was the last time I was in the UK)
"Unfortunately"? Count your blessing that it will not be a Corbyn government, whatever happens.
I for one will be gutted if these lovely sandwiches are scraped.
Corbyn wanted to scrap subs! whats unfortunate?????
"A labour govt under Starmer isn’t the same as a labour govt under Corbyn"
Unfortunately.
I don't believe anything any of them say TBH but we have to face the almost absolute certainty labour will be in power...let's just hope it's not some crazy coalition with the greens or something.
You belive anything labour say? SprintRS
A labour govt under Starmer isn’t the same as a labour govt under Corbyn…the current labour party have said they support the deterrent…what I’m not clear on is their stance on SMR’s…they ‘say’ “backing new nuclear including Small Modular Reactors” but green power is totally all over their policies. What does worry me slightly is their commitments on defence …you would think the tories would have a greater propensity to spend on defence rather than labour
Accipiter, they are taking on cause the market for engineers is very short. BAE are poaching from MBDA, SUBS and Nuclear are Poaching from BAE.. Theres a massive shortage
Fingers crossed that come Autumn time the market doesn’t punish us for a Labour Government. Having said that, the future is bright for RR whatever the political persuasion of the next Government, the few months ahead an opportunity to stock up on RR and shares with the right credentials – gold & mining stocks plus retail in my case.
In this fragile world RR is about defence as well as nuclear power. Here in the North West of England I know that BAE Systems have been taking on many new apprentices at both Barrow and Preston and probably elsewhere; in readiness for what?
I also think it's already decided, but they've got to go through the motions of course!
Latest manufacturing PMI ight explain some of the dip:

Wee, I agree, keep the French out.
I'm also a cynic and believe that Rishi Sunak will use it as a power play to get votes, I think it will go to RR, to bolster the Tory PR machine of putting the Great back in to Britain, so I do think this one will go to Rolls. It won't go to EDF, we don't want the french involved "In 2017 EDF took over the majority of the reactor business Areva, in a French government-sponsored restructuring." - keep the french out, they are not doing us any favours at the moment, so I can't see them getting the contracts.
Why so much emphasis on UK SMR for RR?
Aircraft engines are a huge part of Rolls and with Airbus order book absolutely rammed there is plenty of business to be had there with A330 and A350 orders increasing , the return to the narrow body/short haul market is so important and would produce massive income for the company.
Regarding contract awards This is still a 8 horse race and theres no clear favourite, nothings certain about who will get what and the name Hitachi does not sit comfortably in this scenario. i watched Ferrybridge power station being demolished and now there are 2 power plants on this site both built by Hitachi running and producing energy, ? why are japanese companys more able to bid and compete against British companys and more to the point place more competative bids to enable them to win these bids? tread carefully as the old saying goes, the show aint over till the fat lady sings.
I love it when it states at the bottom of that link..
'The timeline we are on is hugely ambitious, and it is the fastest that has been done in the market to date globally. It is aimed not just at speed, but to deliver a robust and successful procurement process that delivers value for the taxpayer.'
Forgive me for being cynical.. but when has the UK government ever met an ambitious timeline or ever been on budget to deliver value to the taxpayer... We can't even open a music venue on time!
