Yep, a completely pointless exercise.
Gary, you must be bored.£46 in costs to buy them back +21.27p divi to overcome before making anything. The next 2 divi's are 48p+. Hang in there laddie.
So we go XD tomorrow & my next dividend will be £77.00 for my 362 IMB shares.
I'm thinking of selling all on the 17th & buying back in after the XD has passed.
So IMB SP please rise sharply tomorrow just before I sell & drop thereafter (temporarily) just before I buy back.
Just a little experiment to see if I lose or gain, it's wet here & there's nothing else to do!!
Monty888, you're too hard on yourself. Smoking will exist whether or not you own the shares !! I also hate smoking and have a conscience, but own BA., BATS, BP., SHEL. HBR, and IMB and all 'sin' stocks !! Enjoy the high divs and some growth !!
It’s was on Bloomberg and it was a draft US senator trying to get it into law. The lobbyist like big tobacco often get them watered down or blocked. It was perhaps enough to cause a little tree shake. This is one of my holdings where I’m pretty immoral frankly. I hate being near smokers and smoking, had a couple of older folks I liked die early from emphysema thru smoking. However I like the dividends and think IMB will likely rise steadily in its SP (Being very open and frank here).
Gary59, at my age I've seen enough to certainly not be naive !! I've seen the publicly broadcast and US legitimised (?) murder of Osama bin Laden - a very evil dangerous man and agree with his murder as I would with V Putin's - however still Murder under US law and no-one prosecuted. I've seen many frauds swept under the carpet to suit various regulatory orgs., etc.. Tony Blair's wrongful action on Iraq (agree though on extermination of the Husseins), current legal actions against Donald Trump, even slow (continuous publicity forced it) action against Boris's lies to Westminster recently, etc... Greed, Obsession with Power, Vanity, Narcisism, etc.. But Gary59, the persons commiting these actions are the naive ones because they are already quite / very rich / powerful, etc... and their new conquest doesn't really materially change their existence, and they will die some day themselves and not considering the latter is their naivity. I admit I don't naturally think like these criminals, even if aware as I say I am of such behaviours, but genuinely cannot understand the motivation to make another £1m illegally/criminally when one is already worth let's say £50m and earning let's say £2m p.a. !! We all have to live with ourselves and most aren't sociopaths !!
Clued "Gary59, you seem to be implying collusion between non-connected traders ? Latter would have to act in collusion - illegally ... "
Mate don't be so naieve
Monty, you remain silent as to your sources. Can you elucidate, otherwise you will be considered as merely a troll.
Clued I could not find anything to back up m888 post so I'm thinking hmmmm
Although the drop on Friday along with bats against a rising market a bit strange let's see what happens tomorrow
Monty888, any chance you can please a link to these possible laws ? All I could find was https://www.fightcancer.org/news/department-justice-lawsuit-against-tobacco-industry and Master Plan compensation agreement which started 1998. There's always something going on against the tobacco industry, also new proposed action in US against Oil industry !! Also considered by lawmakers are the large numbers of employees in these industries, same as war machine manufacturers, all SIN Stocks. Certainly wouldn't penalise the Lockheed Martins and British Aerospaces at mo considering the current political climate and a good puff is most welcome to calm our nerves !!
There are new laws coming out that set fast time limits for legal settlements regarding tobacco health issues so cases cannot be drawn out till people die. It’s knock on effects if passed in US and Europe could really hit BATS & IMB and wipe out cash and hence dividends etc.
Next week sees British American Tobacco update the market which could carry through to IMB’s share price.
Gary59, you seem to be implying collusion between non-connected traders ? Latter would have to act in collusion - illegally - to pull an sp down 3% and then up 3%, otherwise they'd be pulling against each other and the movements wouldn't be as severe.
People seem to have taken advantage of this fact to sell; can't explain the small drop otherwise. The two big bonanza divis are paid here in Dec and Mar next, so I'm holding!
I’m assuming that the JP Morgan broker upgrade at BATS has had a positive effect here. What is peoples opinion on the affect that the strength of the dollar (relative to other currencies) will have on the next set of results? After Brexit when the pound nosedived against the dollar the tobacco companies share prices hit all time highs…
3% down & then 3% back up today 'Clued'
It's happening all over the market, traders driving the SP's in order to hit their targets & access bonuses.
I agree though it's good to be in here & other defensive stocks like VOD whilst the recession chat gathers pace,
Yes, mystified why this fell so much today considering it is such a good defensive stock in difficult times. I won't say Recession as there is none at present and all the noise is about a perceived imminent Recession. It's 3%+ drop today shows just how scattered the Market movements are.
IMB is a good place to park money while waiting for ?? normalisation, whatever that is.
high yielders are good for LTHs...better than share buy-back heroes.
Fair enough, I was just making the point that looking at total return for companies like IMB can be useful rather than focusing on share price alone
''that assumes one bought at the high''
??
I stated how low the share price is in comparison to 6 years ago.
LTI that assumes one bought at the high and didn't reinvest any of the dividends during the decline. For example, I first started buying at just over £31, however thanks to reinvested dividends and some opportunistic buys during the lows (£12-14) I'm now slightly in profit on an average cost basis.
Hi LTI, I've been invested since March '21 - at that point it was astonishingly low and I went in for the yield. Since that point it's weathered fairly well. I'm holding long term but if it manages to get somewhere near £23.50 then I may sell some as I'd only have to beat a 6% yield at that point. However I do like the 4 dividends per year. I wish all stocks did that!
but more than a 100% increase needed from here to get to the price of 6 years ago
towards the 52 week high
The supporters of (i) pro-life (anti-abortion), and (ii) lax guns laws and mass gun ownership, do seem to share one thing in common (RWMS)! As for nicotine/ vaping, that seems to irk the "left-wing" more (they're not really left wing).
