This sort of intellect is why I come to LSE for some light relief.

WFH, you clearly don't work with Raspberry Pis . The experience of developing for a Rpi vs competitors is night and day. The software and documentation is so much better and up to date. They use an up to date kernel and when you do have problems the forums are incredibly helpful.

I've been burnt in the past using a cheaper, apparently faster competitor's SBCs with USB peripheral power issues and an out of date kernel with non-upstreamed drivers and it's been a nightmare. I switched to the Pi and voila, instant success with no hardware issues and the satisfaction my system would be up to date for years to come and not abandoned by some Chinese/Korean manufacturer.

The newest RPi is capable of 2x 4k60 video outputs so is pretty much a replacement desktop PC as far as web browsing, multimedia and office work is concerned (okay - it is just running Linux so this limits its use).

RPis do have issues, they're not perfect and RPI know this. The RPi 5 has a strange 5V 5A power requirement which can cause issues. There is also concern about costs rising of the latest RPi, but if you want you can still buy a new Pi for £35, just not the latest one.

I've seen a load of random posts across the internet talking about competitors and how RPI has to get its act together but for those in the know, these comments seem unsubstantiated and from people who don't actually work with these things professionally.

It's just an AI add on card for hobbyists to mess around with. Maybe it will get some traction industrially but this is not the bread and butter of what RPI makes.

Do you realise that symmetric key encryption is likely to be crackable by quantum too?

More opinion I wanted to add: I don't think this will be allowed to grow into another ARM. I think it will be bought up, probably by Microsoft who it represents a future threat to, assuming they can wrestle the shares off investors (Sony and ARM being two of them) - good luck with that!!! The Raspberry Pi 5 is a decent desktop replacement that runs Linux, not Windows, at a much lower price and power than desktop or even mini PCs.

Regarding AI, RPI has an official AI coprocessor board that they just released however it uses someone else's chip so AI is not really a good reason to buy RPI IMO. I suppose if you say "AI" enough times it will pump the price so, AI AI AI AI AI AI!

Maybe one day RPI will make their own AI silicon.... one can dream!

Most people on here probably have never used a Raspberry Pi and many of those just think "price go up, monkey buy! Must pump stock with meaningless posts about share price predictions!!!". No offence to monkeys.

The truth is, there is no equal to RPI; what makes them special is their reliable software support, reliable and well-designed hardware and more recently, their clever (I won't say genius) chip design. Other SBC manufacturers may be using faster chips than RPI but they have dodgy or out of date drivers while you can run the latest kernel even on a RPi 1 (which is still being made I believe). RPI is who you go to if you want a reliable manufacturer with excellent software support *and* documentation.

They have steadily been increasing sales of SBCs for hobbyists and industrial uses for years and now they are getting into chip design with the RP2040 and RP1 (chip on the RPi 5 SBC). When they release the next version of the RP2040 later this year which I expect will be faster than the RP2040 and *hopefully* have extremely low power modes and built in RTC.

The RP2040 successor has the potential to steal a large part of the ESP32 market IMO.

If this does not make sense, good, because you need to do some googling. All this is in my opinion so do your own research and absolutely do not believe anything I've said!!!

Okay, so the big investors can have priority. It makes sense sort of, but with today's technology it should be possible for small investors to also buy shares at the same time.

There is no overhead in allowing many small investors to invest vs a few larger investors.

I suppose I am trying to say that there is absolutely no practical reason why small investors could not invest at the same time as large ones.

Retail investors are the reason RPI exists. They bought their product years before the industrial side took off.

And their reward is to invest at 30% worse value. Yay.

For future reference, how do you invest before there are actually retail shares?

Even if Ocado admitted liability/fault in the MKS fee issue, it would be of great benefit. Markets hate these unknowns. Steiner needs a kick up the wotsit.
