Thank goodness for their foresight. Governments have been slow to respond and lost a lot of time in not addressing the seriousness that covid19 would bring. Time is a commodity that is scare in a pandemic. We see this with PPE todsy. The UK is about to run out of PPE this weekend!
Han**** stated to a select committee "l cannot make protective equipment fall from the sky". Economy the size of the UK relying on imports from China for essential PPE, based presumably on cost. This reliance on another country production should HOPEFULLY never happen again.
UK Diagnostic Capability should also ensure we are ready for subsequent waves of Covid19 and the next pandemic. Primerdesign/NCYT will be central to this strategy.

PCR tests are certainly the gold standard.
It is incredible that:
* The UK based its approach, initially, on assuming immunity after recovery from infection, when there was, and remains, according to the WHO, no evidence of immunity after recovery from infection. The UK will have the highest death toll in Europe, perhaps for no gain.
* As is often said, 'Absence of evidence is not necessarily evidence of absence'. Would it be expected that the investigations to date would have produced a definitive answer on whether recovery from infection would give immunity?

The WHO cautioned against investing too much in these antibody tests.
Speaking in Geneva, the WHO's Dr Maria van Kerkhove said there was "no evidence" that having had the virus would guarantee immunity.
She said initial evidence did not suggest large numbers of people were developing antibodies after having the virus, meaning the chances of creating "herd immunity" were not high.
As I suggested in my post to Fred16 @ 16:47 today! The UK were right to be cautious.
This could be bad for the US, depending on how many of their tests are based on antibody tests vs antigen (PCR) tests. Also bad for the FDA. More stringent checks were required for antibody tests. How come the UK identified this but no one else has corroborated this? Unbelievable!
So RT qPCR or dPCR is to be the tried and trusted method to determine if you HAVE the virus or HAD the virus. Thanks goodness for the brillant UK microbiologists at Primerdesign/Novacyt.

Fred16, is the issue with antibody test the fact that early indications suggest the virus may lay dormant at undetectable levels in human cells, and is likely not infectious. Hence perhaps the antibody level to trigger a conformance to positive test case is absent.

Equally, false test results could also be to blame, as a fifth of all swabs return incorrect verdicts.
For some reason, PHE could not sign off the antibody test inspite of initially having hopes for an antibody test.
To me dPCR would provide the fastest and highest accuracy test with 100% homology. Exactly what is required.

3) and other than Roche test has WHO recommendation (only 2 tests have this accreditation and NCYT have this)

The WHO gave the correct advice on testing. Governments just need to follow their recommendations and implement as fast as possible.

Do not forget there are some 193/195 countries on the globe. If Peto's assessment is the way forward for the US and the UK then the same approach must be valid for the others. That's why the WHO recommendation is important.

Recall Roche mc went up $20B on FDA EUA alone. NCYT have a world leading product at the right time. Everyone will need testing. Just depends on what timeframe people are working to.
From the US and UK we see decisions on testing should have been made earlier. The same will be true for the other countries of the world. In a pandemic time is the commodity in short supply. There may be faster tests down the line but the requirement is the here and now not 3-6 months.
The UK have assessed antibody tests and found the presently available antibody tests lacking.
I really wonder if there is a lack of rigour in the FDA EUA approval process wrt conformance to postive test cases. I hope I am wrong time as they say will tell.
For me a WHO approved test, the fastest RT qPCR and the move to a faster dPCR test (that no other Company) has mentioned tells me at this moment in time I am happy to be invested here!

Centrally organised facilities with the capacity to test the entire UK population weekly (in 6 days at 10 million tests per day) can be made available much more quickly and cheaply than a vaccine, probably within weeks.
