Dido Harding, head of the government’s beleaguered test-and-trace programme, has suggested rapid coronavirus tests might be a “business and consumer product” for symptom-free people.

The comments prompted claims from Labour that a “two-tier ‘pay-to-hug’” system was being considered.

The Department of Health and Social Care said: “We are investing in new, faster tests to be available to the public, for free, through NHS Test and Trace for those who need it.

So we now have a mass testing moonshot. But can we reach the moon?

Does anyone have any data on what the manufacturing capacity could be for a UK mass lateral flow test manufacturing? Is the real bottleneck the number of Ginolis LFDA machines in the UK? If a single Ginolis machine can make 30 units per minute and we want 100 million tests a week, we will need 300 machines. Any idea how many BBi and Abbot have? Is there other tech that does not need Ginolis LFDA machines?

Can anyone explain why the publication believe they can justify the use Motley in their title?

Any idea who else has them in the UK? Can they be redeployed? Are there lots in another country? Do we (the UK) have any chance of getting to 120million a week? Maybe not all Avacta tests.

Does anyone have a sense of our manufacturing capacity with BBI? Mass testing will need over100 million tests a week for Just the uk. Won’t just be our kit but how much could we do? And are there others who have the capability?
