Meanwhile, the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency, the UK regulator, has for the first time approved rapid Covid-19 tests for use at home by members of the public, according to two people with knowledge of the decision.
The authorisation of the use of lateral flow devices, which give results in under 30 minutes, by people without medical expertise follows the first such approval of an over-the-counter rapid test by the US regulator last week. The MHRA is keen to emphasise, however, that the devices are allowed to be used only to “find” cases of Covid-19 infections, so that people who were not aware they had the virus are able to isolate. They are not to be used to “enable” people to make life decisions, it said.
Lateral flow tests have been the subject of fierce debate, with some claiming they are highly inaccurate and dangerous if used as the basis for decisions on whether it is safe to visit elderly relatives or end periods of isolation.
