We’re up over 7p on the prospect of a Trump Presidency. FTSE up 1.5%. No possible doubt as to whom the market favours. Confidence all round, apparently. No such enthusiasm when we had our change of government in July.

The Pope said that Americans had to choose between the lesser of two evils. I think they have done so. I’ve no enthusiasm for Trump but Christians would have found it very difficult to vote for Harris with her support for abortion. That may have swung it.

Next trading update is next Monday. Are we expecting more evidence of a turnaround? Maybe even a breakthrough? Like many, I’ve been here since before the collapse of 2022, am sitting on a 40%+ loss and want to see something/anything good.

I’m the same. All the technical analytical stuff goes over my head BUT it IS a very useful insight into how the real movers and shakers think.

It sometimes seems to me that basic concepts like supply, demand, cost, and price which in turn affect profit, investment, debt and dividend are less important than moving averages, support levels etc.

All I know is that when a tanker goes down you’re in big trouble!

You are right about RR. Labour's budget isn't about putting things right; it's about settling old scores. Tax the wicked employers and then when they cant afford to take on staff then its their fault not the governments. Make private education un-affordable except for the very rich by charging VAT on fees. Her wee "I am the first woman in the job" start to the speech showed what a small minded little person she is. Margaret Thatcher burst through every glass ceiling there was 45 years ago and got to a much more important position than RR. It's just like Starmer's tribute to Sunak for being the first brown PM (except for Gordon "Brown", of course (tee hee)).. They cannot get away from their obsessions with class, race and gender. THEY are the real bigots.

Shell are paying a divi of 34.4c which is a yield of about 4%. We are getting a yield of above 6%. Their SP has dropped about 7% in the last year and about 13% since April. Ours is down about 28% for both periods. We’ve both suffered but our drop is double theirs. Does this mean that there are still people prepared to buy into Shell, despite the current low return, on the basis of confidence in the future? The corollary would be that people shy away from us because despite current high returns they think we won’t sustain them.

Am I being naive? Any views?

Y11, Didn't you say on Tuesday (8:15am) that the bad results were all priced in and that you expected 425p by the afternoon which was the level you'd set your sale at?

I see the rules on ISAs haven’t been changed either. Any rumours that they might do it next time? I’d like to think I could get another couple of tranches of £20,000 away into stocks and shares ISAs in the next couple of years. Kicking myself for not doing it earlier.

Thanks for that clarification, GLT. It’s good to know that less than 10% of our output is affected. I’d like the floor to be higher as just over $70 is hardly excessive.

Would be nice if we could set off the tax against the billions we’ve surrendered (maybe?) in Rosneft.

The market is generally liking the budget but it hasn’t done anything for us! Another 3% for our “windfall”. What windfall?

“I am absolutely clear that the actions we are taking will grow the value of BP” says Auchincloss in his wee commendatory paragraph in yesterday’s Stock Exchange Announcement. Maybe I’m reading too much into it but it really does sound as though he is pleading for one last chance to keep his job.

I’m worried that he just isn’t capable of making decisions.Take the policy of continuing with the buybacks whilst increasing borrowing. OK, it maybe makes sense to borrow money to buy our own shares when they are so low but I’d hate to think he was doing it just because it was easier to stick with an established policy rather than change policy to suit changed circumstances.

Your post was probably not intended to be antagonistic. You make a good point that the future is uncertain and, by implication, that cash is a much safer alternative.

You are, of course right but that hasn't happened yet.

Other things that haven't happened are Basil Brush joining the Countryside Alliance, Charlton Athletic coming in second behind the Dagenham Girl Pipers in the World Pogo-Stick Championship and me winning the award for being the least sarcastic person on this board.

This is a discussion forum not a place where we set traps for people to fall into.

My point remains that BP has been and is now a good income paying share dot dot dot

What I meant (and I think most people would realise I meant) was that this is still a good income producing share and that, as such, it ought to be more highly valued. I'm now down more than a pound per share on my average so I am as much annoyed by the drop as anybody!

Just ignore that last one of mine. It was posted before reading MoY’s latest and was based on info long out of date.

Think you’re right. Also, I think I remember BoD saying something about financial strategy being based on an average price of $60 with anything above that being a bonus. If this is right then we’re still well clear of any danger zone.

I agree. I wince when I hear British politicians bleat out the mantra “Israel has the right to defend itself.” What we are seeing is collective punishment for the outrages of Hamas. People in Gaza are as much victims of Hamas as anybody else.

Maybe Israelis need to take a lesson from Britain. We didn’t carpet bomb innocent people in the Irish Republic when WE suffered terrorist attacks from the IRA for 30 years.

Israel would have more respect from me if they were serious about peace. Instead, year by year, we see steady encroachment of settlements into the remnant of Palestinian land.

Peace and Justice go together and in Israel/Palestine there doesn’t seem to be an appetite for either.

Think I’d be tempted to top up if I could. The rubbish results were predicted and weren’t even as bad as the predictions. So the 30% drop in profit should have been priced in. The fact that we have dropped another 5% on results day is just market overreaction.

We are STILL getting our 24p per share a year. Buy today and you’re getting a yield of 6.3%. That’s got to mean something.

I’m looking on the bright side; if RR ratchets up CGT as expected then I can console myself that I won’t be making any capital gains in the near future. I’m down about 90p a share on BP at the moment and not able to add so as to reduce my average. Next time I break even we’ll have Nigel Farage running the country and he couldn’t make a worse mess of it than the current lying, hypocritical etc etc.
