Don’t know if this has been flagged up before but one of the other boards pointed me in the direction of some very useful software. The site is cgtcalculator.com. It does what it says on the tin. Basically, you put your trades (I had over 160 over different shares and platforms going back six years) into the form of a spreadsheet giving dates, number of shares, price etc. You then import them and the software does the rest. It applies the 30 day rule, allowances, carry forward of previous losses etc and comes up with your level of gain for each year. Shows calculations for each disposal too. At the very least, it provides a check on your own calculations (if any).

I seem to have managed to stay under the threshold each year so haven’t reported anything to HMRC but you have to remember to report losses within 4 years if you want to set them off against future gains.

In the real world.... price of oil has again shown that it has a bigger effect on our SP than any other factor.

Thanks. I’ve got a few options. I was also in DLG and sold out today at an acceptable loss (seemed a good idea as DLG came very close to AV’s takeover price) so I can set that off against some more of the gain either this year or carried forward. Let’s hope Rachel doesn’t tamper with the £3000 too.

This is scarily good. Just wish more of my holding was in an ISA. Fantastic yield (especially for people who bought sub£4 or even sub£3) AND amazing capital growth. Drawback is I couldn’t sell very many without paying CGT but, with a dividend like this, why would I want to!

well, you said it yourself “billions of years of changing climates”. so you are admitting that climate changes naturally over time. now is no different.

If my sums are right then the offer, at close of play, yesterday was worth 278.3p plus the possible dividend of 5p making 283.3. Our SP closed at 272.2 so between 6 and 11p in it. CGT implications or other factors might make people sell now rather than wait.

The Board are like Theresa May implementing Brexit. They were, until yesterday, the advocates of a policy directly opposed to the one they are now supposed to be implementing. Like her, they are concerned mainly to keep their jobs. Like her, they will back-track at every opportunity. In her case she achieved nothing and was eventually forced out in ignominy and replaced by a buffoon. I don’t want to see that happening here.

Genuine question:

What do you think Elliott will do now? Will they force the issue and try to get the CEO out? The chairman (credited with pushing for Looney’s appointment and everything that followed from that) is going but surely that isn’t enough.

SP just dropped 14p in ten minutes following announcement. Make of that what you will….

Another drop in AV today. SP is now down over 30p from when the offer was made. That’s about 8.6p per share for us so the 275p is now looking more like 266 or as low as 261 if the “up to 5p” divi doesnt materialise. Probably still better than soldiering on alone.

I was annoyed with myself for not selling out when the Ageas offer took us above 230. This time ive sold half my holding. If the bid fizzles out and we're back to 150 then i'll buy back in. If more suitors arrive and we rocket then I'll still have half. With an average of over £3, this has not been a good one for me but, to be honest, Im more concerned with the effect on Aviva as my holding there is worth ten times what I had here.

You are complaining about “more waffle.” Realistically what do you expect on a light-hearted chat site? Nobody here is claiming to be an expert.

Point taken. To be honest, I've never really understood target prices. I'd (probably wrongly) thought of them as a prediction of what the analyst thought the SP would reach in the next year or so. That would certainly be a more useful figure for an investor wanting to guess what he might get back.

I wouldn’t pay much attention to Barclays; they’ve had a target price for BP of £10 for the last couple of years whereas in the real world the SP (currently less than £4) has struggled to get to £5.

I suppose (stating the obvious) the two (good) possibilities for us now are either a hostile takeover or a long slow climb to recovery. The bad possibility would be a steady drip. I’m not too worried by this morning’s volatility.
