It has certainly been a bad few days (for us and for Sir Keir). Down 25p since Wednesday morning. But we're still no lower (yet) than we were a month ago. I was another one waiting for 450p. That'll teach me (not)!

Good point, Easy-livin. I do have some historic losses. I believe you have four years from the end of the tax year they were incurred to report them to HMRC. You can then set them off. I think this way I can realise about another £4,300 worth of gains in addition to the £3000 annual allowance. This reduction from £12,300 to £3000 has really caused a lot of hassle for small investors.

My big issue with this one is just that so much of my holding is outside of my isa. The gains made over recent months on AV. are just so big that I’ll be hit with CGT if I sell more than 1200 shares. This is not a problem that I’m used to!

I am one of the merry band who topped up today on the drop. Why would I not want a divi of 8.35%? Isn’t that why we are all here and not putting our money into a cash ISA for 4%.?

Thanks CM370 for (what seems to me as a layman) some solid technical input. This kind of input is very welcome. Hope you are right that the cost factor will be well out-weighed by the benefits.

Just use the filter to screen out offensive, abusive posters. And report anything that is dodgy. With a bit of luck the monitor will ban the worst offender.

Brent up. Shell down. People taking the rumour seriously? Surely acquiring BP would do Shell no harm. The only thing toxic about us (apart from the sizeable debt) is the Board.

Shell needs us just as much as Reform UK needs the Tories ie not a lot.

There’s a rumour Chierchia has been head-hunted by Trotters Independent Traders but it could be nonsense.

I just keep thinking that it can’t be long before the grown-ups arrive back and sort out the mess the kids have been making.

Last April, our SP was above 500p for about 6 weeks, hitting 540p at one point. Brent was approaching $90. The two are not unrelated. Can anybody tell me if the volume of buybacks was reduced at that time? If it wasn’t then surely it should have been? Why pay 540p for a share that you could expect to get for significantly less when the oil price dropped?

Maybe I am doing them a dis-service. Maybe buybacks were scaled back at that time but I don’t remember it if they were.

I am definitely advocating that they try to get the best prices when they purchase. Isn't "getting the best prices" what we (as private investors) are all about? I'm not happy letting the lows cancel out the highs. I want the company to buy low just like I try to do. (Not that I am all that successful, of course!)

If SP is unusually high over the period of a quarter, I don't think there would be any great calamity if they didn't reach the target and had extra cash for the next quarter.

I could be talking nonsense but it just seems common sense.

I imagine you are one of these people described as “he doesn’t stand fools gladly”.

Of course, you are only right insofar as the day to day purchases are concerned. As far as the over-arching strategy is concerned there is no rhyme or reason to the timing of the buybacks so I stand by my main point.
