PS. I'm not denying that there are benefits to buybacks and, at the current low SP, they are value for money but the benefits are very long term and not attractive to old timers like me who want our jam sometime this decade.

Well, if the company has bought back 4bn shares then it must have cost them/us around £20 bn to do it. If they hadn't done that then there would still have been about 20 bn shares in issue. If they'd spent the £20 bn on a REAL return to shareholders and not a smoke and mirrors exercise then we'd all have been able to get an extra divi of £1 a share. That would have been money in our hands. Might not have suited everybody but, like Jamtart, it would have suited me.

I would have more respect for your opinion if you hadn't made the sweeping generalisation that people on this site who are sceptical about the green agenda probably believe that "a woman's place is in the home". You have no evidence for that. But perhaps you have supernatural powers 0f mind-reading of which I am not aware?

the “system” converted the word g-a-y in that last post into three asterisks. apparently you’re not allowed to use it any more. i was intrigued by somebody wring “sp****” with four asterisks the other day. i thought they were being funny. now i know.

when we next announce our quarterly profits and the bbc mis-reports the figures and blames us for melting the ice-caps, just bear in mind that yesterday, thursday 22nd, the headline they ranked third in importance on their red button service was “death of one half of *** penguin couple”. i am not making this up!

Scrap Net Zero. Scrap buybacks. Spend the profit on developing oil and gas and/or paying a pre covid level divi. If UK government doesn’t like it then move out of the UK.

I’m consoling myself with the idea that we often have a bad dip in the summer months with a lot of traders on holiday etc. The old adage about coming back on St Leger Day (Sep 14 this year) shouldn’t be true but often is. We rose 70p for no specially good reason to a high of 540p between March and April this year. We could get back there, again for no specially good reason.

I wouldn’t mind so much if oil was something like $50 a barrel but the high 70s is not a bad price.

Well, if we were “under valued” yesterday then we are now just another 2.7% more under valued today. Losing patience (but not enough to sell!)

I keep hearing that this share is undervalued. What I want to know is what has to change to make it valued again.

Two weeks ago the market was down. I lost 6.8% of the value of my portfolio in three days. Now I am back up to where I was before the fall. ALL my other holdings have come up between 8 and 9% in that two weeks. BP has recovered only 2.6%. Enough said.

As we all know (sometimes to our cost) anything can happen. With the current divi of approaching 36p a year, an SP of 600p would still be delivering a respectable yield of 6%. This one could have a bit further to go.

It did exactly the same thing with Aviva last night. 10% apparent drop. Just a glitch. Rectified in the morning.

I tend to agree that we should be around 500p. Our current divi of just over 25p a year would represent a respectable yield of 5% at £5. I suppose the counter argument is that you can get nearly 5% in a savings account without risk to your capital but in a savings account you miss out on all the excitement!

I entirely agree. In some ways I’m happy not to see this sky-rocketing as at over £5 I’d be tempted to sell whereas I am here primarily (like nearly everybody else) for the income. Similarly, I’m not tempted to top up at this price. Happy enough with my average of under 400p. Would be happier still if some of my other holdings (DLG for example) were doing as well.

As usual, on days like this, I’m tempted to top-up but, as usual, I dont have the courage of my convictions. I suspect that sometime in the next few months I’ll look back on this as a missed opportunity.

Its the banks and insurance that are worst affected. (I’m about 4% down in Aviva over the two days and that’s by far my biggest holding.) suppose we follow the usual advice and stay calm, top up if we’re able and just be prepared to wait for the madness to end.

I jokingly wrote on Wednesday that the pessimist in me said we could expect something nasty round the corner. Maybe I should have listened to him! Realistically, I’ve always planned to hold onto these for the income so the 20p drop doesn’t make any real difference, provided, of course, divies continue at the current rate.
