I see the (Catholic) Diocese of Salford is to sell their holding in BP. Apparently, we’ve watered down our commitment to net zero and they cannot in conscience continue to invest in us. Yes, well, let’s hope we water it down a bit more!

As far as the Diocese is concerned, I suspect their decision has got very little to do with conscience and a lot more to do with presenting a shiny woke face to the media.

Berenberg on 13th September posted a recommendation of “Hold” and a target of 161p. That was on a day when we closed at 179p. So they think that the best we can hope for in the next year is a drop and that a drop is worth holding for?

Doesn’t make any sense at all. Could it be that the report was drawn up before the trading update and spectacular lift of 7th Sept and they just didn’t bother to adjust it?

We should remember that on Tuesday we were at 522 and rising and that was WITH Looney and his (slightly modified) green agenda. No reason why we should be any lower now that he’s gone. After the dust has settled, the worst that can happen is that we stick to his policy. It’s maybe not what we want but it’s still bringing in plenty of cash .

If the real reason that he’s been sacked (and he HAS been sacked in all but name) is that he had romantic relationships with members of staff without disclosing them then it shows that the BoD has reached a level of wokeness that makes it unfit to run a tap never mind an eighty billion dollar corporation. Also, if Looney is guilty of no more than an unwise office romance, why didn’t he stand his ground?

On the other hand, If these aren’t the reasons for his sacking and there is an ulterior motive then the BOD is simply lying to us.

Either way, it inspires no confidence in the judgement of the people steering our ship.

The other possibility is that the published reasons for his going really are the reasons he’s going and that we’re going to get more of the same from his successor. Hope not!
