I’m just assuming that people are taking the profit they’ve made since last Tuesday and are prepared to sacrifice the divi as they expect an equivalent drop on Thursday when it goes xd.

It’s what’s going to happen after Thursday that will be interesting. Continuing uplift based on the good prospects or down to the 390s till the next set of results? We saw quite big variations say between the 458 on 1April and the 382 on 5 July. I’m not brave enough to take advantage of these swings and would be happier with more stability.

That’s exactly the dilemma though isn’t it? Do you ditch the ones that have performed badly, take the loss and move on or stay with the losers on the basis that they’ve got to come good eventually. If I had sold my BP holding last Monday and put the whole lot into Aviva, I would have wiped out my £9000 loss the very next day when Aviva announced its fantastic results and added 50p to its share price.

I am nearly as bad at 479. The current plan is to reduce my holding if we get to 450 this quarter. I know the long term prospects are good but I can’t afford to wait and will have to take the hit.

Thanks Charlie. If you’re right and they sustain the buybacks through the quarter then at least we shouldn’t see 360 again.
My Aviva experience wasn’t all sweetness today. I sold out nearly a third of my holding when they were up 20p on the day. Little did I know they still had another 30p to go. I bet there are plenty on this site that have done similar.

They should treat watching bbc like smoking. The tv licence should only be payable by people who want to watch bbc. You should only be able to buy a licence if you are over 18. It should carry a health warning and the cost should be sufficiently high to deter all but the most stupid from buying.
Meanwhile, the government should set up another broadcaster to be called “Real BBC”. This would be a proper public service broadcaster aimed at informing, educating and entertaining the nation. News would be fact not opinion. Drama would be soap free. Singers, dancers and musicians would be paid professionals, not members of 5e public trying to win a competition and there would be not more than one gardening, one antique and one cookery programme on each week. In other words, we would have the BBC that we had in the days of Val, John and Peter.

I have a big holding in Aviva. Today they produced great results with a substantial interim divi representing a yield of over 7%. Their SP has risen over 12% on the day. All this from a company who (like us) had their SP halved in the pandemic but whose SP had fully recovered even before today’s results.

Meanwhile at BP........ we have record profits, but STILL have an sp down 20% from pre covid levels and STILL have a divi 45% down on pre covid levels. And because we are doing so “well” we are vilified in the media and subject to threats of punitive taxation.

I just wish I’d sold my entire BP holding, spent the lot on Aviva and eliminated my entire losses in a single day.

Russ, those are my feelings exactly. I saw the great results and a 22p rise in sp and thought the price would slip away during the day as it normally does. Instead, we have seen sustained gain which has to indicate real confidence. I’m annoyed I sold what I sold but pleased with what I still have. I compare with my other holdings like BP and Shell that report record profits, derisory dividends and correspondingly thwarted sp.

Condole with me. I took profit, selling a third of my holding at 435p. Still, my remaining two thirds have shot up another 22p so it’s all good really ( or 67% good if you see what l mean). Pat on the back for Amanda or does she get paid enough any way?

I may be wrong but I thought we’d been told a while ago to expect 31.5p for this whole year. If the interim is the usual one third of the total then 10.5p is what is expected.

I’m still hoping that the high volume of buybacks that you have highlighted is a feature of the immediate post results period will give us a bit of momentum.

And DB must be pretty annoyed about the 140p nonsense. If it isn’t their fault then somebody else has made them look stupid. The are on record as saying “Buy. Target 472” on Wednesday and “Sell 140” on Thursday.

It’s increasingly becoming clear that there are three factors affecting our SP. these are (1) price of oil, (2) price of oil and (3) price of oil.
Ok, I know it’s an exaggeration and if your going to plagiarise somebody then you could do better than pick Tony Blair but still, after profits of 8.5 B, to slip below 400p is depressing.

What is this Deutsche Bank nonsense? 140p today when they reiterated 470ish yesterday. Since it came out we have dropped about 8p wiping out this morning’s gains. Are people taking the broker view seriously or is it just coincidence?

Funnily enough, I’ve just put £50k into PBs. Your £75 a month (which is what my pal tells me he averages) equates to 1.8% a year which is better than a lot of investments. And you have instant access. And you don’t risk your capital. And you might win a million. You may indeed have the last laugh!

With respect Charlie, we cannot be certain that there will be no increase for the next 12 months. We had no reason to expect more than 4% today but we got 10. Remember that the divi programme was based on $60 per barrel.

.... to see how much of today’s welcome uplift (we ARE about 3% up on the day with the ftse flat) is due to market enthusiasm for the results/divi increase and how much due to a heavy volume of buybacks.

But it does make the yield a bit more attractive. At sp of 408p we’re talking about 4.8%. I’d like to think that with that and the temporary effect of the buybacks we’d be trading in the 420 to 470 range for the next few months.
