Yes it will take time to work out where we are. Just looked at SSE. They dropped 4.5% when the tax was announced. They are now UP over 3.5% on the day. Knee jerk reactions!

SP seems to be holding up (for now). No panic as with the electricity generators. So was the tax largely priced in?

I wonder how many extra staff HMRC will have to employ to scrutinise the many many more CGT returns of people who would previously have been below the threshold. Surely there is a level below which the cost of collection exceeds the tax collected.

Yes, the CGT threshold cut will hit me very badly. Apart from anything else, the amount of record keeping I’d have to do would make regular trading not worth the bother.

Wasn’t it a peaceful campaign of persuasion that led to the abolition of the slave trade and then the abolition of the institution of slavery in the British Empire? Wilberforce appealed to the Christian consciences of his countrymen so I suppose that is one of the parts of history that has to be suppressed in your brave new world.

Yip. There is a fair amount of hypocrisy in the “green” movement. Also ignorance and dishonesty. They cannot or will not see the elephant in the room. The elephant isn’t Nellie. Yes. Maybe just a bit of profit taking and also people anticipating (as I intended) the divi drop. Hope it’s not worries about the WFT.

3.2% drop two days before it goes Xd isn’t good. Kicking myself as I was about to sell the divi on some of them and buy them back post drop at the end of the week. Regrets, I’ve had (more than) a few.

Yes LTI, it has taken 2 years to get back to pre-pandemic levels. It has taken oil prices to be 50% above a good profitable level to get SP back to pre-pandemic levels. My point is that if the divi had been raised in line with profits then the SP would have risen earlier. That would have made the buybacks more mexpensive and may not have been the best thing for the long term interests of the company but, nevertheless, the SP would have risen to reflect the higher return.

I agree it’s the divi that has held back the SP. Like you yourself observed a few days ago, it’s easy to see how the BoD have used the low divi to keep the SP down to do the buybacks at the lowest possible cost. I thought it would take a good number of years for the buybacks to have an appreciable effect on SP. I wasn’t reckoning on oil price being so high and consequently buybacks being on the current scale. It seems to have worked out OK but I’d say that was more due to Looney’s good luck than his sound judgement.

I’m not sure how that works. I thought market cap was simply the SP times the number of shares in issue. Surely when shares are cancelled then the market cap automatically goes down? Did you mean book value?

Entirely agree.
I was hoping for an SP spike with the results that would allow me to reduce but it would actually be better for me (and everybody else too) if we could see the steady progress that has been maintained over about the last two years. In October 2020 myholding was worth £42,000 less than I’d paid for it. It is now breaking even. That is progress.

I see what you mean. The company’s detailed statement does (as you say, on page 27) give a wrong figure for the Q 2 divi. If the bbc news team read as far as page 27 then they may have been misled. I think it’s more likely that they just read the summary page where the correct figure for Q2 was given. Maybe I should have given them the benefit of the doubt but..... based on past performance.... I’m not inclined to.
Anyway thanks for pointing that out and please don’t ever feel obliged to apologise for your detailed research.
