I don't understand why they are undertaking any mega projects at all.

Seems like such a bizarre thing to do unless all the parties have been consulted and agree to it.

Otherwise it could just get scrapped when the next gov comes in.

ok, just to clear this up.

this is not the taliban flag, this is not this isis flag, this is not a terrorist flag.

this is a traditional muslim flag depicting the shahada (islamic declaration of faith), which translates to:

"there is no god but allah, and muhammad is the messenger of allah."

this statement is central to islamic belief and can be used on flags by islamic organisation, which do include the taliban.

however, to conflate the traditional shahada flag with terrorism is selling everyone short and shows a deep lack of understanding.

unless there is a specific reason to link this demonstration with a terrorist organisation (which i don't believe there is as nothing has been presented to represent that), it's not wise to do so.

also, the taliban are based in afghanistan with strong links to ****stan. they do not have a presence in bangladesh. bangladesh has its own islamic extremist organisations such as jmb and anser al-islam.

this is the problem with social media, people just say whatever they think, as fact, with no evidence.

What is the point of this caretaker government other than to be a placeholder and organise elections? I feel like I've missed something in the logic of this process taking upto 18 months and Yunus setting up xyz and taking loans from seemingly anyone, without being able to address the underlying.

It's very true and very obvious. The key draw back to solar and wind is that the power generation isn't linear. And, obviously, solar doesn't generate at night. These peaks and dips can be smoothed by batteries, which work on a small scale, but won't work for an entire country as the cost would be extremely prohibitive.

Let's say Yunus stays in power and is funded by the US (which is a plausible possibility). That's fine for GCM who will break the contract with PC and get US funding to extract coal.

The US absolutely love going to developing countries and pillaging their natural resources.

Unless you think the US will back Yunus in a coup, fund the military, and then expect nothing in return? When the most valuable asset Bangladesh have is a product that America loves to receive. The US is the third largest consumer of coal (behind China and India) and imports/exports large quantities both ways.

I wrote a post before, there is going to be a fight (hopefully in the background and not a civil war) between China and the US for Bangladesh. It's such a strategically important country.

To the victor goes the spoils, which is coal. And it will be extracted regardless of who wins the tussle, because bangladesh doesn't have anything else to offer it's backers currently.

The one blocker to GCM has now been removed, when the dust settles (a couple months or a couple years) they will be mining own coal. There is no other way forward for the country.

Considering Yunus' previous stance, any sort of public mentioning of own resources suggests they are much further along in the background discussions.

The cat is out of the bag now imo, really excited for the next 12 months now!

This interview is all over the place.

He says that he will stand by Yunus, but that he also won't be political.

Then proceeds to say that there should be a transition period (which there is) to democracy, and he thinks it is be 18 months (which is a political view).

Then says he is a professional soldier and will remain so and won't jeopardise the army by getting involved in politics.

Then says he wants reforms to make the army independent from the government and not under control of the government, but under the (typically ceremonial role of President) This is a hugely political position to take.

"Bangladesh's armed forces currently come under the defence ministry, which is typically controlled by the prime minister, an arrangement that Zaman said a constitutional reform process under the interim government could potentially look to amend."

Basically he is flexing and trying to get his organisation in the best position during this transition period. Nothing he says are facts and he has no sway over the things he is commentimg on. He's basically covered every position that benifits him. It's political posturing.

Help me out then redeye, they need coal for 20 years and can't import it. Is there another solution to is ready to go?

Yes, PC, as a state mega company would have been, at some levels, privi to some information about what was happening. It's all need to know, and PC would have needed to know to support Chinas interest in Bangladesh. Even if this was 100% US backed, Chinese intel would know about it and put their moves in place off the back of what was expected. That might be why they moved forward with GCM seemingly out of the blue given what we knew then, to get in before the US to strengthen their hand.

We can guess at what's going on, it's played out a lot in developing counties post cold war. This was fortunately fairly peaceful, which cannot be understated how important that is for a rapid transition.

Would GCM have been made aware of those discussions? Off the record, hints and nudges, yes probably. It is very plausible that GCM knew that something was happening and the likely time line and the likely consequences and proposed next steps.

We, the plebs, will be the last to find out ☺ which is super exciting really. I mean, that now that we can see the direction being played out in the media, the decisions in the background are much further progressed. It's a very exciting time.

I shared a article a while ago where the US stated they were not involved in the uprising. Now to me, that says they absolutely were. I don't recall German or the UK or Russia saying they weren't involved. Reminds me of that scene from that weird/funny TV show years ago when the shop keep shouts out loud to the police man 'we didn't kill him!' Forget the name of the show now.

However, I don't think the US being involved is automatically a bad thing for us. A pro western government that let's the US start building bases in Bangladesh, and opens the door to US funding for infrastructure, might just mean we get funded by the US rather than China. Not sure on the break clause in the contract with PC, but I expect there will be one.

I suspect we are going to see a massive power struggle between the US and China for Bangladesh that hasn't started being played out in the media yet, it's happening in the background.

Bangladesh is geographical in a very strong location, both because it boarders India and gives access to the bay of bengal.

My point, which I am slowly getting to, is that this has been played out in the background for a long time. The students were galvanised and funded by someone, who is trying to win influence in Bangladesh. It had to happen now because you want to come in and save the country when it is on its knees, not once it is already dead. And with the added FX issues, it was time to play your hand.

Now the US are the gloabal leaders in the field of toppling governments lol, so my money is on them being heavily involved. But that doesn't mean China won't come out on top. This is all happening in the background, their won't be a war imo.

I'm very very positive for GCM.
