I agree with your sentiment regarding the CWU, HeresHopin...it is going to be a major obstacle; the CWU are already gearing up for another fight. See: "emergency motion" from their May convention; its available to view on their website. However, regarding the workforce: automation will obviously go hand in hand with (1) voluntary redundancy, (2) early retirement through sickness and ill health, (3) many, in an aging workforce, attaining natural retirement age, (4) the weeding out of the long term malingerers, work-shy and idlers who think their employer owes them a living, (5) the luxury of having to employ less people (in processing anyway) as automation starts to dictate. So on this point, HeresHopin, I somewhat disagree with you. I think this is excellent news from the Royal Mail this morning. Yes, the road ahead is not without pitfalls...and there will be major setbacks from time to time. But five years from now all of this will be a distant memory...and the patient ones will be rewarded handsomely!
