Momentum is probably one of the best strategies in picking shares and has enabled me to generate returns of over 10% over many years.
To concentrate on one sector can be very risky if a factor affects it that is sector specific, for instance if you were only involved in the airline sector the current virus situation would have left you in a mess.
I am invested in many sectors, I have suffered in particular recently with falls in airline and oil companies but these have been compensated to a certain extent by shares I have in gold and utility companies.
I am down considerably but in percentage terms the fall is less than the FTSE so I am reasonably relaxed (I can't say the same for the wife who wants a new kitchen!).

Yep, you can't predict a black swan event, this is a true test for an investor. The FTSE has fallen by 50% twice in the last 2 decades and had recovered relatively quickly so best not panic.

6 people have died from this virus. 2,000 people a day die from other causes. A little common sense and perspective is needed here, if I had lots of spare cash I would be investing more.

Ben, hope you weren't tempted by the oil shares. I am in PMO, down 57% today and now down 80% from the high a couple of months ago. To think I was in profit then. Still, you can't win them all !

Having cancer does not mean you are terminally ill. Many people live with cancer.

Being old and having a weak immune system due to cancer I personally do see a long term negative impact from this virus, my death !

Commiserations but perhaps a lesson to others not to put all their eggs in 1 basket. I am down considerably once again with PMO but only have 5% of my investment in here so the damage is limited.

Beta shows on average how a stock is correlated to the stock market. PMO has a beta of 2 which means as an example when the FTSE falls by 3.5% (like today) PMO would be expected to fall by 7%.

They are joint with EVRAZ which coincidentally was down 7% today.

PMO has the joint highest beta of all FTSE stocks so hopefully when the market recovers PMO will climb back up.

12 months not 2 months.

I have a system where I hold for 12 months, it generally works for me so I will stick with it. It means I have to put up with this for until the end of December. It has risen from 64p to £1.21 during the last 2 months so maybe I'll time it OK this time.

Wish I had taken my gains at 26%, now 47% down. Still, you can't win them all, I'm glad it's only a small part of my portfolio. Hope it does a Serco, bought that at 140, it fell to 88 but is now at 150 so maybe there is hope.

Note to myself, next time I am 20% in profit with PMO take the profit. Now 32% down. Third time this has happened to me with PMO.

Run your winners not necessarily good advice. I am invested in the following:-

CPI, was up 26%, now down 47%.
PMO, was up 21%, now down 32%.
MAB, was up 38%, now down 11%.
EZJ, was up 18%, now down 24%.

There is a lot to be said for banking gains.
