AngerSharkz, I beg to differ. Surely if RM are offering the best pay and terms in the post and parcel sector then recruitment shouldn't be an issue, unless there are other factors that our competitor's employees don't like?

Mike, if the overall package of pay and terns at RM are really that great then why is it that we struggle to fill vacancies?
My mail centre only managed to recruit 80% of the casuals required last year. This year the figure is just over 60%. Apparently the casual workers can get better terms and pay in the retail sector.

To be fair, the Tories have inflicted this upon themselves by practically going AWOL for most of the summer and autumn after the longest leadership election in history (in which the Tory membership failed to elect a fit for purpose candidate) and all of this was carried out during a cost of living crisis.

AngerSharkz, if the QoS goes to the gutter it won't be "Big Dave" who will need to explain to OFCOM why there was a lack of contingency planning especially in light of the new legislation?

JB, we have an outhouse which is usually full of Christmas casual workers bit this year it is rammed full of York containers, which I guesstimate to be just over a thousand, that are all full of mail and have been sitting there since last week. I was due to carry out a safety inspection on this outhouse but I can't even get into the building.

Something needs to happen fast otherwise we're going to run out of York containers, mail sacks, secure storage areas, trailers etc as the mail is building up and there doesn't appear to be any urgency from management to clear the backlog as we don't have any agency staff or staff on overtime. It's almost as if senior management are deliberately manufacturing the situation.....lol

In by 10am, out by 11am so presumably 59 minutes for a cup of tea and to take advantage of the facilities before the next meeting?

JB, as I have stated before, I firmly believe that even if the union had accepted the 2% pay deal plus the decimation of it's members terms and conditions back in the summer then the board would have still come back for more as they needed to initiate confrontation in order to press on with their agenda; in other words there is very little that the employees could do to avert the situation that currently exists.
Ultimately, RM UK will end up as Evri but wearing red shirts and occasionally delivering letters in the afternoon.

Personally, I think that Thompson is a duplicitous snake however ultimately that may make him the best man for the job? His master plan (or his master's master plan) seems to be to break the union and in doing so he may well break the UK operation in order to rebuild the business so that it blends in effortlessly into all the other parcel couriers. The plan may work or it may crash and burn but ultimately who cares anyway? The main thing is that the SP is driven low enough in order to provide decent buying opportunities.

Sid, if you do some research you will find that GLS has a completely different business model to the Royal Mail UK operation plus it has it's own CEO.

Boark, all of your post is correct and the CEO needs to keep his shareholders/city friends sweet, usually with decent profits and regular dividend payments.
It will be interesting to see if a dividend is paid on the GLS end of year results when the group could possibly be in a loss making or break even scenario although my belief is that the board will want to issue a dividend even if the group ends up as loss making. Is that a possibility? Could it be a tax avoidance initiative? Just a thought.....

If the terms were that much better both now and going forward, I would hope that there would be fierce competition from the Amazon, DPD, Evri, UPS and Yodel delivery drivers however that's not the case so you have to ask yourself why a company offering much better pay and terms doesn't have delivery drivers beating the doors of RM UK down and begging for a job?

JB, thanks for sharing. There are numerous articles across most of the journalistic websites with arguments for and against depending upon the news outlet's persuasion.
In my opinion, both business and employee will have bloody noses with the employee winning eventually but at what cost? Eventually, the UK operation will become a gig economy employer with owner/drivers just like Amazon, DPD, Evri, UPS and Yodel and customer service will undoubtedly suffer in the drive to boost profits and dividend payments.
The public may complain for a few weeks but will soon forget what's gone before and let's not forget that this forum isn't a poll on whether the business has a good QofS record or whether the employees are getting decent terms, it's about personal profit.
The good news is that this will create turbulence in the short term which may provide some good opportunities for short term trading although undoubtedly some will get burnt fingers which will doubtless be an exciting proposition for those who like that trading scenario?

Redceo, it wasn't that things were particularly better or worse however there was always the threat of industrial action on an annual or biannual basis because no employer (even the UK Government) likes to concede a pay deal to their employees without a decent fight.....lol

Splitting up the two businessess and "dumping" RM UK back on the UK Government would certainly be a preferred option for the CWU?
