The latest Investing Matters Podcast episode featuring Jeremy Skillington, CEO of Poolbeg Pharma has just been released. Listen here.
One last thing I forgot I was going to post. I have some Ceres Power shares CWR, which have not been great for me. Today they have tumbled a bit more. RBC the broker has rerated them from a target of 600p to 150p, how can they do that. Are they not experts, employed at monitoring companies and business. It's not that they have cost me a few quid, it's just were they saying to clients Monday, "yeah CWR probably 600p" and by end of week, "well we reckon 150p. So you bought some, surely not, we only give advice Silly!".
You might note some good punctuation going on, though I am never sure about punctuation!!
That should be good luck y'all, I sometimes miss complete words, and often letters. Is it my speed of thought to much for my typing, or am I just getting stupid? You don't need to answer that! My punctuation is often missing too, it's a wonder you can make sense of my drivel, still maybe there is no sense, probably not, as in this, see you later
Hello T, nice you posted in 2024! My portfolio still doing well, but has had some setbacks this last week or so, maybe even this whole year! I looked at MKS and nearly sold at about 290 after a mini boom from Christmas sales expectations. So many times the market gets carried away and then even when things were good they were not good enough so share price falls. As per MKS has done this and as so often I did not get myself into gear and sell. Oh well, sometimes I cannot seem to stick with lessons I have learnt in my now 15 years at investing. I am not working at the moment and probably won't have not worked for a year or more. I had an offer when I was just about to visit my sister in US when she was 1st ill. Could not do that and now I just don't feel I'm up to it, more than I think I might be okay but worry about my health and just don't see why risk it. I miss it though, even the things I would say I didn't enjoy like the getting up and travelling. I think I did enjoy them and they structured my day.
For big N I still have most of my YCA though sliced some off a while back, they continue to do well, might sell up soo!. Did you ever get some, shame if you didn't. Where and how are you, and now you have a reason to post and answer me!
O, in Australia, it's such an adventure and great time to be there I would think. In 1963 my parents started us on emigrating there in the end my father preferred to desert us and leave, he was such a waster. Never been, ever, and feel maybe won't now. hope you are good and enjoying it. It's so long since some of you have posted I have4 almost forgotten who the rest are, but be nice to hear from you. That's not enrirely tru I have forgotten now in my dotage, if that's the word
Good y'all, using expression from my half Texan sister once.
Hello everyone, things have improved in value with most of my shares. Haven't done much other than sit and watch. Today looking good so far, good or at least inflation maybe. Bought some ENt bck the other day, I had sold some but not all a little while back. They had dropped to nearly 800 so bought back roughly what sold. They have done okay since so maybe selling again soon. Have been dong a bit of top slicing here and there on stuff that has gone weel and might be peaking, all guesswork as usual. Anyway here is Christmas and I need get ready for it yet again! So merry Christmas to you all, good luck with everything and a happy New Year.
And another thing capital gains I think can be spread out across the years they occurred so if your £6,838 is not entirely in 23/24 then you should not likely be due any. You need check that out but I am sure that the one time I dealt with
my capital gains it was treated like that
Just to clarify my "already too late" remark, that is to register for self assessment, not the actual submission. Whether you might somehow register for self assessment after the cut off which is in Oct. from memory I don't know but you can try.
And I am not at all an expert in these things but have been subbing my own self assessmnets for 20 years or more and even once had to do capital gains. Also involved doing business taxes, and HMRC have always been helpful when you face up to things which is what you seem to be wanting.
Why don't you just ring up HMRC. They are pretty helpful often. You haven't done anything wrong and it is only small amounts, so what's the worst that could happen? It might save you a lot of time and effort.
If not ask the organisations you are using for these savers they should be able to advise you.
The alternative to this might be registering for self assessment on the .Gov site and then just answering the questions/filling in the forms then subbing and paying..... if this is for 22/23 you are I think already too late. If all this is for current tax year you have all the time in the world, but can start finding out in prep.
Don't stress yourself out too much about it, it is not a big deal, I almost am inclined to say HMRC shouldn't be that bothered about it and neither should you, but maybe that is not good advice.
And the benefits of being free are?
Sovereignty, that's been useful.
I look at comments like yours and often wonder if they are serious, I am not sure I could name a benefit? There are a few difficulties it has made for me and my family as we try and live our fairly ordinary lives.
Not quite sure why anyone would want that for us, but if we are free and we mostly benefit from that, just let me know a bit of what we are benefiting from that is real.
Okay maybe you are not being serious and it is about time we gave up on being serious about this as life goes on, so maybe you need not answer!
No RCDO O, I saw you on that board the other day?
It is a worry the Hamas Israeli war if it should be called that.
I wonder whether to try and sell up in big quantities whenever these things happen, but never do and they seem to go away so enough.
Though there is a hardness to them both, shame for all those innocents effected.
Topped up US holdings in TELL (gas) and VFC (clothing), they were at lows no other justification, will have to see if it was wise.
My overall portfolio values holding up nearly though have lost some ground from when i said were pretty unaffected a week or so back.
How are the rest of you?
And good luck to everyone
Yeah! Somebodies posted, I look most days and lately often disappointed.
I do get you all may well be having a bad time, like Dowp.
For me it has actually not been that bad, perhaps because i own so many different and varied shares.
Maybe not the way to make lot's of money but is safer as proven recently.
I do try and do some day trading but have not done any much lately since my THG efforts, which i have ignored since I sold them all.
Was think of selling some of my GFRD early this week, so glad I never as since the results it has flown. It also has the benfit of a couple of healthy divs by end of year. This along with MKS, AV., YCA are the type of thing that has been saving my bacon while most shares I have are falling.
Meanwhile VOD has been making a bit of a recovery, some shares I like have fallen back, US ones INTC, VFC and TELL plus Phillips in europe. British ones have been up and down like yoyo's but probably better overall. Liking HTG, BLND, and DNLM (like Dowp) and topped up on them recently as kind of day trades, but longer term and holding already. Will sell with 10%/£100 gains.
Thats all from me, I actually would really like a rally and then buy a house and end or reduce all this. Even though I may not have found things as tough as some of you, much of time I don't really like the exposure to risk. Still that probably won't happen. And when i look at some of the shares I have lost thousands on, albeit stupidly, AGM and TWD recently, it makes me wonder what these people I am lending or giving my money to are really all about. That along with some of the better firms salaries and way of business. Still I join in for my own ends I suppose!
Don't now why I said VTY on last post as I was talking about VFC a US share I mentioned recently.
Have some VTY in my daughters portfolio from when GFRD split and sold their housebuilder off.
Just getting muddled like I seem to do sometimes.
Thought the OCDO up's would have a few of you posting joyously. Me I have none, though maybe a little rubs off on my MKS.
Good day for my PUMA shares after a steady decline over some while, have held a bunch and bought back some I sold, at lower prices on way down. Have a fair bit of confidence in them at least as far as their products go, which would hope will lead to SP increase.
Sold all my THG last week at 103 so just missed best price, might have got back in at 90 but not dropped that far as yet!
Bought some more VTY last week though only another £500 worth so now in for the princely sum of £1500 in all, would like some more but will drip them in over next few weeks as I hopefully sell some other stuff.
Anything else, not much, bought a few ENT at time of Primary Bid offer which I think was 1240, as so often got below on market at 1180, and also straight into my ISA. makes me wonder how PB will succeed even though it has a nice principle of looking to retail investors.
Have sold a few more here and there can't think what right now, and bought a few on regular investment schemes.
Overall portfolios not looking all that bad, though some stocks have suffered badly, others have done well and offset.
So am happy enough with my shares, now perhaps for the rest of my life.
Hope you are all good and enjoying summer, if we can call it that? Was good for while but now the usual washout. Any of you gone off for roasting on the med?
Best wishes nezlob.
Hello everyone, hope you are doing okay. We have had some nice weather, some good sport with my main interest the GP, being McLaren and Williams performing better. Cricket too, winning the last test, and Wimbledon showing flashes of good form for the Britishers, but in the end unfortunately fizzling out. Talking of fizzling out how are the shares doing for you all. I'd say I am middling at mo., dabbles in HTG and THG have paid off. Rest of stuff very up and down with some good, MKS and PHIA (Philips) for example and some bad VOD as an example. Some disasters too, rubbsih investments haunting me PMG and TWD. Still overall portfolio's a little down on peaks, but less than 5% which does not seem bad, still hoping for a good run. Have no reason why other than hope I suppose. Bought some US yesterday VFC, the VF Corporation a kind of fashion/apparel bet, they are at a low at moment. they are based in Denver where my sisters daughter lives, I always like a little connection, and they own good brands, example Vans, and Dickies. We'll see how they do, I plan on scaling up over the next little while. That's my plans, still a bit down in myself but hanging in there! GLA n
Come on you lot post some messages. I joined this board as you were such a fun but sensible lot. Brighten up and brighten up me.
I have had a bad time of late, my sister who lived in Houston had been ill with cancer, got much worse and I flew over. Sadly only to see her pass away, not regaining consciousness from heavy sedation. She was my last fuill sibling, both my brothers died fairly young. It is hard to accept you are the last one standing, the best and the worst deal. Stayed on for her funeral and then came back. A week or so later one of my cousins took his own life, he had his own demons and my sisters death can not have helped him. A very loved patient of my wifes has just died (cancer again) and my best neighbour has terminal, cancer in her brain. Both these despite knowing their fate manage(d) to keep very cheerful, it must be so hard. My sister never got any breaks, she was only diagnosed in September, I saw her in October she was hoping to get a few more years, but no. I saw O's loss of his brother it is all so sad. My condolences.
I came on here to cheer up and have just reduced myself to tears.
Anyway it is a kind of therapy and it is an antidote to share dismalness.
Lets post again like we did last summer, or at least as we used to, please.

Hello and good morning everyone. Not really anything to report, might sell some HTG later or tomorrow. They have been up and down and have been able to get in and out making some reasonable profit. Christmas is nearly here, not feeling hugely enthusiastic but should be fun I hope. Best Christmas wishes to you all and happy New Year, n
Top slicing is selling some of your shareholding, but not all of it, so you slicer them off the top!
It can work well sometimes if the price then reteats and you can buy back your sliced off shareholding cheaper.
If the price goes up you still have some left to sell etc..
So it reduces the risk of you regretting to sell at a good price and the risk of you selling everything at a price that is subsequently proven to be less than best.
I nearly always do it it. Whether it is for the best is hard to say, I just don't like over committing.
So for Kevin how I do things is top slice when I have made say 25-30% profit, then await next share movement, perhaps buying again on a drop of 15% or so or selling more as price goes up. Much of the time this works well, but like most things sharewise not always!
Hello everyone, it is a gloomy time of year and we have some fairly gloomy markets and investors. But as our much missed friend (joke) Boris would say down with the doomsters and gloomsters. Anyway with my gloom hat on today I sold all my AGM holding, at an 85% loss. It was a stupid investment that I compounded by reading RNS's etc which time and again showed the company to be poorly run, hardly doing any business and having little idea of how to run themselves. I got into it via Primary Bid, with little bit of graphene knowledge, like "graphene is the best thing since sliced bread it can do anything and was inevented by some good old Britishers from Manc uni". I hung on and hung on till today when I finally realised my silliness. So thats the gllom and doom. On a brighter note n these last few weeks I have been able to sell quite a few little buys I made while markets were pretty much at lows, AO. HTG, IDS (RMG), PMG, ANTO and some more. Most of those i had just topped up holdings and then sold top ups, some like AO I just dabbled in. I only dealt in £500-800 amounts and aimed at making £100 which I did and often more. Still have few dabbles to pay off yet THG and some, and might go for some more like VTY, who knows. I am hoping for a good recovery and then will sell most of my holdings and buy a house in the borders maybe and start a new life without gloom and doom. Maybe??
