The latest Investing Matters Podcast episode featuring financial educator and author Jared Dillian has been released. Listen here.
Top slicing is selling some of your shareholding, but not all of it, so you slicer them off the top!
It can work well sometimes if the price then reteats and you can buy back your sliced off shareholding cheaper.
If the price goes up you still have some left to sell etc..
So it reduces the risk of you regretting to sell at a good price and the risk of you selling everything at a price that is subsequently proven to be less than best.
I nearly always do it it. Whether it is for the best is hard to say, I just don't like over committing.
So for Kevin how I do things is top slice when I have made say 25-30% profit, then await next share movement, perhaps buying again on a drop of 15% or so or selling more as price goes up. Much of the time this works well, but like most things sharewise not always!
Hello everyone, it is a gloomy time of year and we have some fairly gloomy markets and investors. But as our much missed friend (joke) Boris would say down with the doomsters and gloomsters. Anyway with my gloom hat on today I sold all my AGM holding, at an 85% loss. It was a stupid investment that I compounded by reading RNS's etc which time and again showed the company to be poorly run, hardly doing any business and having little idea of how to run themselves. I got into it via Primary Bid, with little bit of graphene knowledge, like "graphene is the best thing since sliced bread it can do anything and was inevented by some good old Britishers from Manc uni". I hung on and hung on till today when I finally realised my silliness. So thats the gllom and doom. On a brighter note n these last few weeks I have been able to sell quite a few little buys I made while markets were pretty much at lows, AO. HTG, IDS (RMG), PMG, ANTO and some more. Most of those i had just topped up holdings and then sold top ups, some like AO I just dabbled in. I only dealt in £500-800 amounts and aimed at making £100 which I did and often more. Still have few dabbles to pay off yet THG and some, and might go for some more like VTY, who knows. I am hoping for a good recovery and then will sell most of my holdings and buy a house in the borders maybe and start a new life without gloom and doom. Maybe??
Well good morning everyone. Here is autumn already and it's been getting quite cold. Still no heating on as we are supporting our own energy strategy which is don't use any!
Long time since anyone posted, for me it has been inactive time trading wise. Like Treacle watching a lot of the Queen and feeling a bit sad. I don't want to sound a complete wimp, but it is hard to imagine she's gone.
Have been doing the odd buy here and there in the hope of a quick sell on recovery, but that hasn't worked, lot of them just sat there doing nothing much, still at least not crashing mostly. Lost a lot on long term holdings last week, but still portfolio has a good value in comparison to March/April 2020.
Going to Houston next week to visit my sister, last time I even flew was 2013, so am a little nervous, but looking forward to it.
Hope you are all well and life is not as bad as all that!
No easy trade deal with US, there's a surprise. Bankers will be traded over here to get their bonuses though. Could come a day when we say, missing that Johnson fella, if we go completely crazy that is.
And another thing.
I run 3 portfolios, one for me, one for my wife and one for daughter.
Daughters is just a startin life kind of thing which she still has stood by.
I try and keep wifes and mine balanced, but fail big time there is usually £40/50k diference despit actually putting more into wifes. But gap now down to £30k as she and her shares have been doing good.
She has shares in company called Ricardo RCDO an old favourite of mine, they have been moving up after a period of drifting down over some years. They are to me a clever outfit and get involved in all sorts of engineering mainly transport and enviro. Might be worth a dip in, they are still way off their potential value.
WARNING WARNING, just in case you haven't worked it out most of my investing idea's come out of educated guesswork and gut feeling, so don't rely on it!
Wow, it's so hot.
Just sold some ENT, which I had a little dabble in a month back which was over and above my old holding. Made more than 25% so happy at that. Done nothing else this week that I can remember, had some divs in and reinvested but that is all.
Sister should have been here on visit from US but has dropped out as she is ill so am at a bit of a loose end. Might try some seaside trips next week even weekend, down to Bristol channel maybe I have never been beyond Bristol in that kind of Weston Super Mare coast area, though drove through north Devon on way back from Cornwall years ago. If any of you have some recommendations, I think NB you live over there somewhere let me know. It's day trip terittory just about so only looking for nice towns/resorts really.
Hope you are all okay and good wishes, n
Hi everyone, time flying by as T says. Did some shopping today, bought some AO. and some TWD a last desperate fling on them. I sold some PMG yesterday and bought a few HTG, nothing much else since I last posted god knows when?
Maybe I should be looking at OCDO too, but never read posts till now, and now I have no investing money left, unless I risk savings.
Lets see what tomorrow brings maybe I can sell something that flys, probably not though.

If only the price of years of Conservative neglect was £10 billion!
I was on the edge of voting to leave EU as they were another costly level of governance and corruption..
Turns out we don't need EU to do that when we are subjugated to a bunch self righteous 2nd generation immigrants, Russian loving Eton greedy boys, ex forces so they will know how to run the country, comprehensive educated girl power, and self made walk all over everybody entrepeneurs. Vote for them and they'll set you free, subject to our subjugation and accepting they didn't mean and are doing their best.
Oh well, it's not been great!
This afternoon I bought some more HOC, which I ironically am already in hock with, if that's the right term! Another 525 shares at 86p each!
And then in a in for a penny in for a pound decided to get back into HTG at 200p for 290 shares which I sold out of a while back at about 260 for nearly 1000 shares.
So not exactly the last of the big spenders.
I just feel I need to do something to give me a chance if things start to turn round, they will sometime!
That's it from me it's over to you shy bunch.
GLA .......... n
You're right N it has been quiet, having to look down posts to find Bragade.
T, you are usually so conscientious and regular, hope you are okay?
Sold the THG I bought last week yesterday, still sat on some SDY and ANTO I got in hope of quick returns.
Today would have been good for my long term holdings except for AMD knocking the stuffing out of things.
Have CPI and Xiaomi which have done well but not on the scale of my AMD holding so am actually losing in p/f despite generally good day.
Ah well can't win 'em all.
Best wishes and luck everyone
T, that did perk my interest OCDO being on Primary Bid.
I didn't follow it up, partly as i hold M&S so have a bit going on to do with OCDO anyway.
But largely as I just didn't get to it.
I've found with PB that you can generally buy shares after there offer for something similar, which for means I can get in my ISA where all my money is, plus share allocation not in hands of PB and so often reduced.
Did anyone get any, and how did they do it?
Yep, weather is good, flaming June my mum used to say.
Not much going on, thought about shopping some shares earlier then held back.
Then just decided to buy some SDY which I hold, and so can average down a little.
Then in a buying frenzy bought some THG as a wild shot in the dark.
How about all you others what's new?
Was everyone scared to post on page 666, or are you all running out of things to say. We should all be fearful, so should we be buying. That's my plan, £1000 a day for the next few days in my hardest hit shares, already held. Will eat into my savings, but just pulled a bit out of pension, only £10k, blimey where did I learn to say only £10k. Then it gets taxed, still will last me 8.5 days maybe. Bought some BVC today and some Phillips. See what tomorrow brings, am working so will have to try and keep an eye on things in spare moments. Maybe I will buy some Xiaomi overnight, but I think not, lets wait till tomorrow.
Heard on radio some traders think we are seeing similar trends to beginning of 2008 collapse so need be cautious.
Best wishes and hope you are all doing okay in these difficult times.
Hi everyone, goodish day for markets today and for us poor pensioners, good old Fishi and Bodger! Nicked nicknames from LBC's Nick Abbot but quite fitting. It's partly all this partygate hassle that has given them the "conscience" to look after us little people. So really it has all been for the good I'll vote for Bodger again (I won't and never did....just joking)!
Sold the VTY I bought a week or two back for £100 profit, I will make a day trader yet (give or take week or so).
O, that was a good call on MKS, I should have had a short term dip in them, I was nearly at that point and then forgot, idiot! I hold a few anyway so the rise has been good, though I think I am still a little bit down overall on them.
Good luck for rest of week, only tomorrow, we'll see what that brings.
Monaco GP this weekend always quite exciting if processional!
Been quite a good recovery these last few days. The shares I dribbled in are all positive, some not a lot, and some quite good. I now have to decide do I sell and make a small amount or keep for a better return, maybe!
I did get a small amount of HOC on Friday but too small to have made much more than a tenner so far, ANTO done okay showing £72 profit, big time stuff hey!
I just picked shares out I already have in my long term p/f and so can keep in that or sell (and buy). I kind of picked okay shares but could have done a lot better with quite a few, still a little profit right now is okay by me.
Hope you are all okay, nice day here today in Oxon.
Hello you all. Have been busy and fed up with things lately. Plus have not been feeling my best, from heart problems or maybe this MDS I have with blood. Anyway today is a good day, have been of work most of week and rest has done some good. Maybe I should just pack the working in and concentrate on my health and shares.
So this last few days have been taking a chance we are on some lows and bought LSEG, VTY, and ANTO. Might get some HOC tomorrow, am kind of drip feeding my way in to some short term and smallish sort of day trades but will likely be week trades, even weak trades knowing me.
My portfolios have held up reasonably well though down quite some bit just lately. In a way I am surprised with so much wrong in the world, Ukraine, Inflation, China Covid, probable shot consumer confidence with cost of living hikes, not got stuffed more.

Hello everyone, hope you are all well. Nice to see you back CSDI.
I have not been doing any trading hardly at all since this last month or two.
Done some top ups on ii free regular trading and that's about it.
Anyway today I bought a few RMG which I already hold and have sold quite a lot at better prices than today.
Had a delivery from them today actually early and my IC regular subscription is getting back to being almost on time.
So I am a bit more optimistic with them than I have been.
N I do still hold Yellow Cake which continues to do well I am about 65% up at minute only had £2.5k worth but am hanging on to them for now!
Not much news elsewise (haven't used that word forever....if it is a word) computer seems unsure still I am going with it!
Best wishes and luck to you all.

Well hello everyone, it's me? n that is. have been a bit busy and also not really feeling like posting much. Anyway decided I ought say something. Am back teaching older school children motor vehicle stuff, 3 days a week traveling to Slough which is a pain, the works pays well though so worth it. Sold a few shares 2 3 weeks back, not entire holdings just trimming a bit of, top slicing I think it's called. So have bought most of them back now. Also back in BVC which I sold out some time back, when I felt the Covid testing was going to peter out. They also do telecoms and other medical which is now probably enough to make them value for money without the C19 tests. We'll see, am already 11% up, but am hoping for more. Surprisingly I don't have much more to say after not saying anything for some time. So will will wish you all the best and maybe post a little more often in future, n
O, as for gathering information abut investments, I pretty much get that from everywhere. I do at the moment subscribe to IC but that is just a passing fad. I have used FT, use internet, radio, any kind of news here and there. I sometimes see things (products) or hear things that impress me, then I look at what is behind them. I am not at all a day trader, hopefully that admission will not have me being called to resign from the brigade. I really cannot think how generally i would pick out stuff for that although I picked Hut Group recently just on why should it drop so much and it worked out. But I could have picked it many times before and not done so well. I tend to day trade on back of my portfolios, but only rarely, that works okay. I get ideas from here LSE and the Brigade. I kind of think you are so astute O that you already know most of this. Like you I might have took Stockopedia, but never did, I think I just felt I trust my own instinct and judgement as much (not more) and it costs less (hopefully). It would have only been another maybe idea platform for me. Not suggesting I hope this helps but you by the look of your comments should trust your own judgement, but as we all should never get carried away. I do look at RNS's and try and interpret accounts, not sure this works, but it can warn you off. I often borrowing from CSDI using the idea of acronyms DDMYOR, don't do my own research, but JDI just dive in! IWSO, its worked so far! I sign off with DINMW, I want you all to work that out?
I don't actually it's do I need more wine, clearly not!
