H-hi The PTPS pension is a defined benefit one with Crown guarantee. No insurer is going to take that on, its guaranteed by the government. i.e. no money to be made.

Most BT buildings, including almost all exchanges were sold off years ago and leased back. Most office space is rented so no real property asset. Its assets are really the network and its electronics and staff. For 5g you will still need the Fibre network and it will need expanding to provide access to the new sites needed for 5g.

Its not a question of who could purchase BT but, what to do if they did. At the moment Openreach is part of BT group so would be owned by the new purchasers.It would still have the constraints on it regarding fairly treating other operators, so would be unlikely to invest in a new local Fibre network, as others will get access to it at a fair cost, so no profit in it. If Openreach was purchased on its own, with its current assets, that would be a different story. It could then do as it wished with regard to building a new network, until OFCOM got a handle on what was going on and then put constraints on it. Either way it would be a gamble to purchase BT with or without Openreach, so I think at the moment with OFCOM sitting in the wings its unlikely to happen. If the government really want the public to have access to high speed broadband they need to change the remit of OFCOM, so that either BT or a new owner could move forward. Until then I can't see a takeover happening soon.

With reference to the pension ( BTPS ) please remember that BT has caused some of the deficit problems when it took payment holidays in the past, so not funding it then has partly caused the current situation.If they had made the payments things would be looking much better, but it is what it is, mistakes of previous management long gone with a big handshake.

Yup pacemaker. If BT switched it all off at midnight the UK would come to a grinding halt by 00.10. There would be nothing working unless you are a radio ham. Sentiment is low as people are not prepaid to wait and see if this plan works, trouble is we have got used to everything "now". It will need time to see how it's going, I'm in for the long haul it will go back up its a case of how long.

Looks like people are doing just that more than 10M bought than sold at this time.

Happy with that, no dividend cut and at last the realisation that many middle management rolls to go. They have been a big problem for many years, thinking they run the company. Nothing yet from those who constantly put BT down on this board !!!

could be the case if leaving voluntary ,and not with a package. If under release then I believe you can have 6 months worth.

You have seen the light. Don't forget you can pay into sharesave for 6 months after leaving and get them at the end of that for the option price. Win Win and taking it early if you live an average lifetime you will end up with around the same amount of money as you would by taking it at 65.

This looks like a Backhaul Eathernet product. Unless you have there fibre network, or Openreach fibre running past your front door this will cost ! For most residential customers this could cost thousands to install. You would be better off getting an Eathernet ONEA service from BT. As a res coutomer you are never going to use a semitrical 50m (SDSL) service. Do you think 50mbps each way is something that you would use the full bandwidth ? FTTC is more than enough for most people.

RM. One can only assume that you are running your own business or self employed judging by your distain for employees. Your own man maybe. So did you decide in the distant past to go your own way in the world and not be an employee? Run things your way ? Would this explain your strong options?

RM That comment is not fair. Take anybody in any industry that has worked there for much of there lives and there EXPERIENCE will make there lives easer, it may in some eyes seam lazy but they will have met many challenges too gain experience. They have also worked for or inherited there conditions of employment, when that gets eroded they kick back. Experience in BT is now a numbers game, if the % of a failure is low enough then the answer is loose experienced staff, it's been going on for several years. Experience dose not equate to lazy.

incentivising The proposed changes do that well. In 2009 BTPS members had there pension age moved from 60 to 65 so somebody aged say 57 at present would be hit by 40% reduction but under proposed changes that reduces to 24% add a vole try redundancy payment, incentivising. As for a skill shortage they have also been doing that for a long time, so do not see that changing. Many of the people we are talking about are being paid between 27k-36k but the newer staff many are under 25k so replacing one you are at least 2k better off...

Hi. If the offer for BTPS members is accepted this could work for BT in the short term. If followed by a targeted redundancy package for the members as has happened many times before. As said many are in there 50s so with a reduction in there loss if taken early it would be tempting situation for staff.. It has to also be remembered that BT has caused much of the present deficit with the payment holidays it has taken in the past.
