Fleccy is correct, in that Openreach own and maintain the network from the Exchange interface (main distribution frame for coper , splice optical frame for fibre) to the customers premises. Otherwise known as the last mile. BT own the rest of the copper and optical network, i.e. inter exchange/core. There are clear demarcation lines, for staff from either side that have been in place since Openreach's inception, working on the other party's network/equipment is not allowed except at the demarcation frame's where connections to the other party's network is allowed.
Floating off Openreach, can't see that any time soon, there is to much income to be made renting the network/services to other operators.

Pound. That's partly correct regarding Openreach staff, but it has been the case that when, since day one, staff announce I am from Openreach people say who. They are supposed to say in effect, I am from Openreach representing Acme telecoms. Problem is many people who have. BT product expect a BT engineers , Openreach still means nothing to them. If there product is with Achme then they expect Acme staff, you can't win. The public eh ...

Avro. BT is nothing like British Gas. They purchase and sell energy, install and offer maintenance on heating systems and offer you over priced Hive, products. If they loose an energy customer or boiler maintenance contract, then they have lost it, BT on the other hand still get income if you change your BB provider, or other service if a business, unless you happen to have another providers network feed to your premises. So they loose far less income than BG because they still have a network to deliver there products over. Therefor a win win situation...

This is all a bit irrelevant unless you are going to sell. Yes 3 years ago £5, but 10 years ago around 60p, so today its still up 300% from 10 years ago. Then again 20 years ago it was around £10. It will go up, it will go down, it only matters when you sell. Only bye shares if you can afford the loss if it goes belly up, otherwise its a gamble, but with a dividend each year so its not all bad. IMO its undervalued at present, but until Brexit is resolved one way or another, the markets will be all over the place, just wait and ride out the wave..

Think you are correct Pacemaker. But its not just the wages bill, but the other hidden staff costs that will also fall. The average engineer costs around another £10-15k a year, with van, tools, tester calibration, PAT testing, equipment safety testing , training etc . so that will save even more money to direct to other projects.

Aus. Brexit is in slow motion, this year,next year, sometime, never. There's hope for us yet...

Avrohom not sure why you have re done the calculation, in your case to represent your argument or point of view. It was given as a scenario to show that a share dividend COULD make you more profit, you have chosen to move the start point to give a different outcome. I could give it a go and come up with another outcome. The thing is share prices go up, they go down, it only matters if you sell them, nothing more nothing less. If the price wear to rise to £4 in a year then some will be very happy, but some that got in at a higher price will not. Sit back and wait or sell up. It's up to you, but please stop the constant negativity because the price is not where you want it. Hopefully one day, maybe soon or later it will rise to a fair price. ...

Perhaps BT should become a broker !!!

BT are in a good position with current technology. Network is still king, until new transport methods are developed that remove the need for a physical network. Don't think that will be soon, and if it is then hopefully BT will have a part in it. The thinking appears to be, in this topic, around the last mile. Apps will come and go so will ISPs, as in the energy market at the moment. But they depend on a network, not just the last mile, but Nationaly and international to deliver there product. But BT is much more than the last mile and its limited services, there is the network behind that to link it all together, the secure networks that business need every day, same for Goverment and the Military. Digital TV transport, live Broadcast of news and sports, most is transported by BT. So yes competition is hitting them in the last mile, and 5G onwards may impact on that even more, but whoever is supplying it will at some point need the Network.
So the last mile may soon be a thing of the past for some but the core will live on for a good while yet, unless SubSpace launches next Wednesday week.

IT was bound to happen at some time. There have been managed exits for the last 15-18 years, starting at 2 years money now around 9 months for most. So the same people will be the target, experienced C3 D1 grades with years of experience, that now counts for nothing, it's a shame. Still threw will most likely get around the same amount of cash if made redundant say 6-9 month without tax, dependent on service. To be honest most will be glad of the release as they have just been waiting for the day they become a target anyway.. The only thing that may be an issue is if they are unable to take there pension when leaving, not sure how that would work if not part of a release package.

Could the reason be that Openreach are now legal separate from BT, i.e. if it were Plusnet ( BT owned ) then it would be Plusnet and OFCOM ?

Quick search returned 1997 as the earliest dividend year, it may have paid earler did not bother to search deeper. So that's the last 22 years of income...

There were lots of BT staff that did at around 60p nine years ago. The point I make is that you can pick any two points in time to demonstrate the argument for or against it being a good share. The thing that cannot be denied is that over a period a good income has been had in dividend.

Ah but what about those that bought at around 60p ten years ago and have had a good div return every year as well at say an average over those years of 10p per share...

Saitoman. Thats exactly what I did 4 years ago Never looked back, cash in bank, shares at a discount don't have to worry where the money is coming from. If you take it early and live an to na average age, say 80-85 then you get the same amount as you would retiring at say 65 Enjoy them years...

Faults FYI This used to be the case from the late 80s, £200-250 of shares a year held in trust for 3 years, under similar rules to a share save scheme, it was called Allshare. It was ended in the late 90s 2000s to be replaced by free BroadBand and later free BT TV, Who saved money there then !!! I know which the staff would have preferred !!!
