I believe that the people, pound, is referring to are those who several years ago did internal construction. They would build from the ground up racks of equipment, and if needed commission them onto the network. Most of them were deployed to other rolls several years ago, as nearly all that work was given to the contractors working for the company supplying the equipment. Therefore there may be some still around doing the odd bit of construction, but not many. 10-15 years ago some did do what pound is talking about, but that was then. many left BT, changed rolls as the work decreased. This is all a bit red herring and perhaps shows a little jealous of past happenings. It is not happening nowerdays, there will allways be a few who chance there arm, or try to bend the system, but they tend to get caught in the end...

I would think now the number of construction type people still left,that have not been redeployed into other rolls is very few, perhaps only a few hundred. Most of that type of work is now contracted out. Even those that are left have a tracking device on there vehicles so it would not be hard to get caught out if some still wish to chance going early. It's part of there managers roll to make sure they are where they should be, and they do, there level 2 manager has to also check this from time to time. So IF people are still doing it on a regular basis, then perhaps ther managers should be the ones considered to be costing the company money for not doing there job correctly. Again I would think the number who could chance doing so to be very small compadre do to the total non management workforce.

It's the company that decides what rota they want there staff to work, not the employees. They get changed to suit company needs, or so management with no insite, deem they should be. This then impacts on employees home life in some cases, causing them to have to change things like child care etc, which they do. Then a year or so down the line it's found that the rota is not providing the desired result and changes are asked for by the company. Depending on an employees role they may be starting as early as 7am with finishes as late as 8pm or later. They may be working a 4 day week, 5 day, 9 day fortnight, or 14 day 3 week, including Saturday's . So your comment pound is a little insulting to the people who work almost every day of the week and whose families have to juggle there lives around it. Some people do go home early, that is because they work flex time where they can if needed work up to an hours after there normal Finnish time with NO extra pay, if there is no work for them another day to take them to there normal time they are allowed to go home up to an hours early, is that perhaps what you are referring to ? Flex is up to 6 hours positive or negative in total I'e if you work 1 hours flex then you are positive 1 hour. Then Finnish 30 min early next day them total of 30 min positive...

Faults. Fibre all the way would be nice, but, cost is prohibitive. Imagin replacing all the metallic water pipes in your house for plastic, then expand that to all the homes around you, then the local town, etc. New build is the way to go, and FTTC then selective urban areas. It's easy to say, fibre to all, not as easy to achieve when you need to replace the existing network.

Yes system x, and y and txe10 are the current main switches for pstn. BTs intention is to keep them running until a suitable VOIP solution is put in place, I would suspect that 80%-85% of households still have a working phone line, but it is declining. All data, in one form or another integrates into the NGA network with only exchange to cust having a very limited amount of PDH which can be power hungry. It would not surprise if within 10 years some smaller exchanges close as the become intagrated into local area switch centres, say 6 or 7 into one.

Much of this has been happening for over 10 years, unused, redundant equipment has been switched off, then where possible removed and space either reused or left empty with minimal heating used where possible. Dial tone is in fact, confidence tone, allowing the user to know that there line is connected and ready for use, removing it would no doubt cause people confusion. Secondly some older exchanges use a mechanical tone generator but most now do it all electronically and it is embedded within the switching system making it difficult to remove. If you meant by its removal that you do not have a phone line but just broadband, then that is already the case and there is a small charge for the connection with no telephony. Don't think pacemaker was saying people are reading emails. The internal directory can show a diary for an employee that gives the intended location and activity for any given day, also if they have any staff reporting to them. After all this Brexit rubbish is resolved the markets will calm and stocks can resume direction, hopefully upwards with some confidence in the future.

FM. Yes legally separated from BT but still part of BT group and report to BT, all at the behest of OFCOM due to ongoing complaints about compliance and treating all SPs fairly. If the intention was to get rid of the Openreach part of the operation, then it would have happened then rather than down the road. IMHO. Openreach staff were TUPE to Openreach and they are tied in for 2 years, so perhaps if DT were to make a move I guess they may want to get rid down the road, but if not I see no reason to contract out or get rid of the money making member of the group.

Contractors in the BT network is nothing new, but the reputation of the workmanship is a cause of consern at times. In many cases they are paid, in many cases by the number of jobs completed, which can result in issues. They are restricted in what they are allowed to do by virtue of there contract, so the good ones are not able to as much as they could, and the lesser can get away with what they can. Openreach staff have a lot more ownership of there work and can resolve issues that contractors are not able or allowed to do. They also have more checks and audits than contractors which helps keep the few wayward ones in check. If the work was contracted out as a whole, it would not be long before problems occurred, with little control by BT to control the situation. We all know that in many aspects of life, when the experts no longer do the job, that's when it all starts to go wrong, example the railway operators... If Openreach staff were to be TUPE to a contractor, then it wil all start to fail in a short space of time. If BT do decide to sell the family silver, then I believe that would be the beginning of the total breakup of the whole group, and we as a nation will be the poorer for it.

What a load of rubbish. Firstly it is talking about the year 2017-2018 but using current exchange rates, the pound was much higher than it now is at the end of that period, misleading at the least. Many of the other operators use contractors for many of the rolls involved in there company, where as BT use very few in comparison as most rolls are in house for the sake of quality. The 13000 jobs to go are mostly middle management therefor a fairly high wage bill, whereas the 6000 new jobs are at much lower wages, probably around 70% lower and many on fixed term contracts that will only be renewed if needed, not permanent rolls. All in all not a balanced piece at all.

As said, O2 sold off, 10 years ago around 60p, now 400% higher, reinstated mobile network, internet connections up to 70mbps unlike dial up at less than 56k, the UKs leading network supplier, that allows you to live your modern lifestyle. Looking a bit deeper, that's a lot for £2.37 a go me thinks...
