Hi a lot of banta going on. Which ever side you are on in Brexit the bottom line is, at present we are leaving, good or bad. The real problem is that if you voted stay, you knew what you were voting for. Those that voted leave, voted for there version of leaving, be that trade, boarders, immigration or anything else. The problem is that there was no, " this is what it will be if we leave, set in stone, no budging". So leavers voted for there interpretation of leaving at a personal level with no big picture that all could see. Like it or not ( I do not for the record ) the government will decide our fate. Until that happens anything else is the same as a leave vote, a personal interpretation and nothing else. Enjoy this Europen weather while it lasts !!!!!!!!!

When Openreach was formed, people did not understand what it was or what it did, so the branding and logo was pushed very hard. It has taken a long time for people to get used to it, and many still see it as BT the company they were used to. So now I suspect the BT bit has been dropped, not ready to float it of, more people have now become used to the name and understand its part of BT. The same could be said of Plusnet, if they had vehicles I doubt the logo would mention BT. but they are part of the BT group. Also now Openreach has become a little more detached from the parent, It perhaps helps to aid that separation in people's eyes. Do not think anything sinister is being played out........ YET

Do not think Ms Garfield would be welcomed by Openreach staff, she did not cover herself in glory when head of Openreach, upset a lot of long standing loyal staff with a Welty of experience.

RM That could be correct, but, just imagine the impact if only one fell over, if only for a few hours. No matter what redundancy you put in place, the more centres you have the more resilient the whole network. Then you have the man with the digger, in the wrong place at the wrong time, hit the wrong route and !!!

Pacemaker With respect to FTTC the fibre element dose not necessarily go back to the E side serving exchange but a local node exchange. That node may have 5-10 exchanges off it dependent on its location, e.g. if rural then a higher number. So long term some rural UAX exchanges could be closed completely once there is a VOIP solution for them. See the point regarding battery back up, but I would rather have a 50v copper link in case of emergency rather than a battery that fails just when I need it, still time marches on and most people have access to a mobil anyway.

This has been on the cards for many years. around 10 years ago there was a trial in the south west for a VOIP exchange,it did not go well. But tech has moved on and is now common place to use VOIP for telephony in business. One issue for FTTP is I believe a copper pair will be needed to support calls in a power off situation in the home. One good thing could be the ability to move and take your number with you. With respect to the Exchange end once cleansed parts of larger buildings could be vacated reducing the lease cost in return, but there will need to be more street cabs to support FTTC and VOIP equipment. So lots of green cabs and BT do not need planing permission in most cases to put them in. With respect to private services, many copper products now use digital technology either from the customer site or the serving exchange, older less used products have been withdrawn, or will be going forward, advising customers that there product will no longer be supported after a given date and offer an alternative if required. Most customers now use Ethernet products for there services, those who still use a copper based product will need to change but would be giver fair warning, problely several yearsThis was always going to happen, question is will it be 7 years or more like 10-15 knowing how long things take to do in the real world.

What did OR people think of her ? Problely best to say many of the longer serving engineers were not very impressed with her thoughts in regard to there contractual rights and conditions. But for those who liked watching "The X Factor" she was probely the best thing since sliced bread.

Openreach are responsible for provision and maintenance of the network and some, or all, the terminating equipment, between a BT exchange and that Exchanges customers premises. Connections between exchanges may or may not, be worked on by Openreach staff dependent on the product or service. Equipment within an exchange may be the responsibility of Openreach, or other departments, within BT group, dependent upon the product. Openreach is an answer to a question of equality to any service provider, and therefor operates at arms length from BT group, or its divisions. It is a political answer to a very complex situation, so in answer to the question, its BT and us, the share holders. If Openreach were to become its own company then BT and OFCOM and maybe the government would decide what its assets would be. It ain't simple !!!

HH. With reference to the comment regarding the attitude of BT staff towards the company. If that person had been working for them for 10 years or more, then they may well feel annoyed with how it's run. Changes to there pension, as an employee they were offered a deal at the start that is now being eroded, constant number bashing, constant time restraints on getting the job done, middle management manipulating stats to say what they want eigther upwards to higher management or down to staff. At least the latest move will remove some of them. The constant, we know better attitude when changes are made, nobody wants to listen to the people who do the job and may have a better idea how to resolve a problem. After years of that some will become negative it's human nature. JMO !!!

C3PO. I do not think you could close too many exchanges, say20% in the long run. There is too much Ethernet Backhaul terminating in them at present. It's not the sort of kit to put in a street cab waiting for the first car coming along to hit it. It needs to be in a secure building with fire and heat safeguards in place. There will be some that could be closed and smart cabs be used but would need a diverse network in place to compensate for the loss of a cab to keep the network working. I can see it being used in new developments but the cost would be high. Yes mobile will grow with 5g but will still need a fibre Backhaul network, in fact a bigger one than the present 4g network.

Chris I understand your sentiment but, At the maturity of the scheme there is a choice to be made, either have shares at the option price or the invested money plus small interest. Once that choice is made that is the end of BTs involvement, there is general advice from BT that share values can rise or fall and that individuals should consider that when choosing which option to take, and take independent advice if they feel they need more information. Many see these schemes as a tax free method of regular savings with the chance of a gain at the end if the SP improves, if not money back, plus.

Things in BT go in Severn year cycles. Whatever process ot thinking just starts over again, it may have a new name but it's all ways the same old,same old.

Fleccy Not strictly true regarding FTTC The E side network is still utilised ( pressure cable) to connect the telephony to the exchange. FTTC has only put the broadband equipment remote from the exchange, hence the higher speeds as less line loss. Also true SDH replaced PDH as the preferred delivery method but not all exchanges, mostly in remote areas, are equipped with SDH. PDH is still in use for the local end at 2m or 8m or 16m systems. 2m being CWSS and ASDH on copper with 8-16m systems delivering 4 or 8,, 2m channels. Typically for Isdn30 provision, if a site has a PDH system and the customer requires additional 2m channels then if there is capacity on it that will be used rather than providing a new SDH link. You are correct that in most cases the core network for this type of product is SDH but there lots of PDH still in use. As for exchanges being cleaned its a bit hit and miss, in general not as clean as when they had dedicated cleaners in years gone bye.
