Stoney, agree 100%. It's hard to imagine worldwide immunity when we're all going at different speeds and the virus is only just beginning to flex it's muscles re variants. It's potentially the perfect scenario for a virus to proliferate, working at the weakest edges all the time. As the WHO said very early on, no-one is safe until we're all safe.

I believe the Government will announce next Monday (14th June) that the date for full opening will be put back two weeks from 21st June to 5th July. This will give the scientists time to evaluate the effects of the Delta variant compared with the Kent variant (now it has become the dominant variant in the UK) on hospital admissions and deaths. If, as Thoth2 is predicting, it shows up anything significant as far as younger people's health is concerned, prepare for more measures and early school closures, vaccination programmes for children similar to the US etc. etc.

I wasn't directing my comments about scare-mongering at you, it's the mis-interpretation of the Sky News report afterwards that I was concerned about. I've read your posts re the Lancet article which is very concerning. However, the Sky report, if true, appears to suggest that the efficacy of the vaccines is pretty good. I know we're all here to maximise the return on our investment in SAR, but surely the fantastic results from the vaccines so far is something that we should be celebrating?

Yes, absolutely. Long Covid is going to be one of the legacies of this virus for years/decades to come. Hopefully someone is/will look at possible therapeutic treatments.

HbD I asked about this when I went for my second jab. There's been no pattern to the side-effects apparently. Some people had no side-effects with either dose, some had them the first time but not the second, others had no side-effects with the first dose but suffered second time around, and some have had them with both doses. What appears to be the cases universally though is that they only last 24-48 hours, so soon forgotten about.

Ahfam, my point is, if 50% of the adult population has had two doses (roughly, go with me on this one...) but only 4% of the infections a day are in people who have had two doses, that's a magnificent job the vaccines are doing. And how many of the 400 a day have only recently had the second dose within the last two weeks, so won't be fully protected?
Efficacy of the vaccines has far surpassed anything that we could have hoped for, but there will always be people in need of the kind of treatments SAR is developing, either because they can never be 100% effective, or people refuse to have the vaccine, or there just isn't enough to go round.

So 1 in 25 new infections - or 4% - are in people who have had two doses. That equates to 96% efficacy for the vaccine, which is more than anyone is currently claiming. There's no doubt the third wave is here but please, calm down with the scare-mongering!

4p, wow it's really not far away now is it? At this rate we might even reach... the price I paid for my first batch in February 2011 (4.11)!!! Mind you, it's been a hell of a ride since then! Would I do it all again given my time over? You bet I would! Was I thinking about selling at 25p when I first bought in? No, I wasn't. I've been very fortunate to trade myself into a good position, and I may trade some more at some point, but I've not waited this long for 25p from the "Mothership". GLA. K

I don't mind debating the merits of a company, like you I believe that testing the arguments in favour of a company is healthy. Several people have pointed out that the SP here has stagnated over 3 & 5 years, if I was looking at this as a new investment with c. 5% dividend yield this year I would probably look somewhere else with a similar dividend profile and more growth potential. But this is a much better company than it was when I first invested, loaded up with debt as it was, and has the ability to weather a storm and come out at the other end stronger.

You're probably "discussing" this with the wrong person. Having been invested here since 2008 I hold 10,000 TW shares and have £26k in the bank. It's been one of the best investments I've made. So, if it's alright with you, I'll continue to hold until I decide to buy more or sell.

From today's Shares Magazine, discussing the latest Nationwide house price index data:
"While the spike in deals in March was partly driven by the original expiry of the stamp duty holiday, over two thirds of those moving home or thinking of moving who were surveyed by the building society at the end of April said they were doing so regardless of whether the tax holiday was extended, suggesting activity is being driven by a shift in preferences, potentially for larger properties and in different locations.
At the heart of the issue is the fact that in a normal year only 5% of the country’s housing stock changes hands, whereas 25% of homeowners surveyed say they are in the process of moving or are considering moving."

On that basis, demand is likely to remain strong for some time, underpinning higher house prices and, I would argue, therefore higher profits for builders despite increases in materials and labour costs. K

stt1, take a look back through the records. Periods of house price rises have always been good for housebuilder profits. It's when prices start to fall, or drop dramatically as they did after the 2008 Great Financial Crisis, that housebuilders come under pressure. I've highlighted the risks several times in our conversation on the subject (are you choosing to ignore the bits that don't fit with your deramping agenda?). If you want to believe that house price rises will lead to lower profits for housebuilders, good for you & good luck wherever you choose to stick your hard-earned. I'm keeping the faith for now, if the special divi comes back next year you won't get these for less than £2.00. K

More market activity, the tie-in with NBS has been strengthened. This company, and the share, have performed really well so far this year and looks to be heading in the right direction still. I don't know how much longer it will stay under the radar but I wish I had funds available for another top-up whilst it remains so.
