(Sharecast News) - GlaxoSmithKline shares shot higher on Thursday as it emerged that activist hedge fund Elliott Management has built a multibillion-pound stake in the pharmaceuticals company.
According to the Financial Times, which cited a person with knowledge of the investment, the stake taken is "significant".

Glaxo announced last February that it was planning to split into two businesses: biopharma and consumer healthcare.

At 1235 BST, the shares were up 4.6% at 1,348.54p.

Looking at those late reported "sells" yesterday, I think the larger one would have been a buy based on the sp at the time. It's an odd pattern though, as if someone is setting an alert at 15.55 to trade in BKS shares. Be interesting to see if the same happens again today with another little spike.

Thanks Bobsdad, I hope you get some kind of confirmation soon. I've used the web interface a couple of times and it's horrible too. You go through all the stages, add your money, press "apply" then you're presented with a random blank screen, no confirmation of receipt of your hard-earned. To be fair though, I did receive an email from them more or less straight away, confirming they had received my application. The rest of it worked ok, I received my allocation of shares (took about 3 days for my broker to add them) and the balance of cash returned to me after about a week. I think my default position for now is not to use PrimaryBid at all until they get their act together. It's a shame, the placing shares are looking cheaper & cheaper every day!

TeesExile, many brokers offer a "bed & ISA" service whereby they manage the whole process with minimal spread and only commission to pay. Unfortunately, my own broker (HL) has temporarily suspended this service due to Covid. I'm holding off for now & hoping they re-start the service later in the FY, at which point I will be using it.

Lots of trades from 15.56 too, may be a leaky ship? We'll see in the morning.

Must admit I'm struggling to understand the mindset of the MM's. Going along nicely all morning, highest daily volume for many months (so plenty of business for them), then suddenly drop the bid & ask by 5 points. Completely killed the trades. No-one wants to sell at 2.15 with news due on so many fronts, and no-one is going to pay 2.25 if they think it's going to get walked down further. Surely the only way for them to encourage more buying & selling is by raising the SP, encouraging more sales & buys? Still, wtfdik...

It dipped a bit yesterday before accelerating away again, be interesting to see what happens from here.

Then there's this from the recent RNS that will have grabbed some attention:
"GSF highlighted that since October dynamic containment paid an average of £17 per megawatt hour versus £6.5 MW/hr for fast frequency response during the same period.
It would potentially create a significant uplift in revenue across GSF’s 90MW of operational assets in Britain. The company specifically said that it believes that current dynamic containment prices may result in a material uplift in the company's revenue for the current calendar year.
“Gore Street is excited to take part in this service which reinforces the benefits of our revenue stacking model, enabling our assets to participate in multiple contracts to generate significant value,” said Alex O'Cinneide, Gore Street Capital chief executive."
Must be driving some of the SP growth.

Yes that all makes sense to me Eadwig, and of course the larger GSF grows the more it will appeal to the larger income Trusts and Funds providing, as you say, management keep their eye on the ball. Re the dividend, I'm certainly hoping for level payments of 2p per quarter within a year or so, then up and away from there. Hence the demand for shares and subsequent SP rise.
I know there have been negative comments on here recently but I'm struggling to see a downside, and I'm looking hard.

I was thinking about this last night. I guess if the increase in Net Asset Value is equal to, or greater than, the placing cost, then there hasn't been any dilution. Does that make sense?

Thanks Eadwig. I don't really understand how PrimaryBid, and their dodgy app, have managed to engineer a monopoly over IPO's and placings. They're playing the "white knight" card, galloping to the rescue of PI's in their battle for fairness with institutional investors, but all they've actually done is create another clique that excludes ordinary investors. Where will this end? Perhaps eventually we'll only be able to trade shares on the PrimaryBid app? God forbid...

So as expected, nothing from my broker about being able to purchase more shares directly in the current Offer. So looks like the only way to buy additional shares this time is via the PrimaryBid app, as it says in the RNS. Having gone to the App Store to download it, the ratings are very low and feedback extremely negative. My main concern, clearly, is the security of my money and data, this doesn't feel safe on either level. Has anyone had more positive experiences with the app? I'm sure it suits some of the interested parties to do things this way (PrimaryBid, GSF), but as a mere private investor it doesn't suit me. I'll be sitting this one out, sadly. K

Thanks seen_it_done_it, I'm slowly building a position here and I must admit the discounted placings have helped so far. I'm here for the dividend yield as many others will be, looking to identify about a dozen reliable payers that are also relatively low risk. I'm up to six so far where I'm gradually moving funds from higher-risk shares. Good luck with your own investments. K

You may have gone too early Aber, we're on the move!

I'm in SAR amongst other things (this is NOT a recommendation), the directors there applied for & received a government grant to research the potential benefits of one of their therapies in treating severe COVID illness. You would have thought either PXS or DSM might have gone down a similar route. I guess no-one could have foreseen the potential issues wrt clotting, but at least they would have been in the game at this stage.

Hmm, I'm beginning to wonder if there's more in what you are saying than I thought adv11. This from today's Shares Magazine, under the banner "Trusts regularly raising cash to invest in assets can hamper returns" (they are describing issues at GCP but could just as well apply to GSF):
"Since 2015 the share price has gone from 120p to 102p while the company has raised close to £450m in new shares resulting in massive dilution of earnings. Remember every time new shares are issued the value of the existing shares is diminished.
Fortunately, net asset value per share is slightly higher than in 2015 but that’s not much comfort for investors.
On a total return basis the shares may have beaten the All-Share but last year’s dividend was barely covered."
Food for thought, certainly.
