The same old debate comparing hydrogen versus electric heat pumps. Surely everyone is aware that insulation standards need to improve in the UK regardless! Decarbonizing a significant proportion of the existing gas grid is possible immediately with hydrogen, that is the prize! Get on with it!! Over time both electricity and gas grids need to evolve. Meanwhile we have a massive legacy housing stock that needs affordable and breathable cladding to allow the more efficient heat pumps to be effective, without causing moisture problems . National streamlining of planning depts concerned about changes in external appearance would help too! A sense of urgency needs to be injected and major electrolysis projects need commitments now! Meanwhile big players continue to toy with pilot schemes, look at what Shell are doing with CERES...

If hydrogen leaks its buoyancy means that it rapidly dissipates upwards, but you need to run from petrol or diesel leaks. Where is the ITM-Motive news many crave?

Such articles about solar farms typically quote peak output power, available during clear daylight skies and cool weather. Even the best USA sunshine states only achieve 25% average solar capacity, so to suggest such projects would exceed HP-C is disingenuous. Onshore wind farms would be much better land use in the UK. By all means, install solar on all new-builds though!

typical natural gas grid usage is >100GW during winter months, with typically 25GW of that being used to generate electricity. So government talking about doubling their current 5GW H2 target is frankly not even ramping it... let alone getting to a position of surplus that UK could sell to EU.

does suggest otherwise, e.g. "electrical heat pumps to produce CO2-free steam from waste heat", but in addition to "water electrolysis" it also mentions "methane pyrolysis", so perhaps that is greenwash too.

Surprised Looney isnt going further and faster. The DONG->Orsted model is the only way to survive long term. O&G volume reduction is a one way street dont bet on CCS changing that..
