RE: BBC Article on Blue Hydrogen14 May 2021 10:34
The climate emergency is first and foremost about reducing CO2 emissions, and there are already environmental concerns about lithium or nuclear alternatives. For me the answer is a wholesale switch to hydrogen across all sectors ASAP. Don't waste time on the efficiency debate, that will improve. Besides do you think the status quo is efficient??? Others have already mentioned the futility of costly installation of heat pumps in our existing poorly insulated housing stock, so increasing H2 percentage in the gas supply would be immediately worthwhile. Without waiting for any protracted debate about cladding... The gas grid is a more efficient energy carrier. Gas separation technology exists to enable H2 to be used locally, potentially to boost local electricity networks without the cost of increased cabling. Fuel cell powered trains rather than high cost/maintenance overhead catenary. So I say yes to blue H2, to buy time, but with an ascending tax scale to make it progressively uneconomic while the Oil&Gasers work out how to become Green Energy companies. Rolling out H2 forecourt refuelling facilities would be an easy target to encourage the transport shift, and demonstrate green credentials. Especially by contracting ITM Motive.
