Apologies for the delay responding, my phone battery was kaput. The only reason the hydrocarbon economy works, despite its huge costs in exploration, extraction, refining and distribution is because there is huge demand for it. Basic supply and demand economics. We are told that hydrogen for road transport has stalled in the UK because there is insufficient demand. Why would that be? Insufficient geographical distribution is one obvious reason, just like the chicken-and-egg problem of encouraging battery electric vehicles. I just returned from a weekly task of lugging materials to and from a fairly remote location, using a hydrocarbon powered vehicle. There are plenty of hydrocarbon refuelling opportunities along the way, which don't delay me more than a few minutes to use, and there is certainly no electrical outlet at the remote destination to enable hours worth of battery recharge while I work with the materials. I can't be alone in wanting to quickly refresh my vehicle's energy supply without considerable range anxiety and wasted time. The efficiency experts are damaging the potential hydrogen economy, certainly in the UK, by limiting its demand. Are they just blinkered or do they have ulterior motives? Regardless, they are ignoring the 'efficiency' of usage. - which for me at least is a major factor in my "equations".
