The fact that this appears to have already been priced in gives some indication of why the price has been held back recently and also gives a lie to the idea that such news does not leak out to those who can influence price movements.

Deep discount to what? It was 203p only two years ago. It could quite easily slip that low again. Me too. This has been held back for years over pipeline fears and now that this is gradually being resolved with the new generation of cancer drugs then true value will emerge. Question is will AZN just let the unit price rise making this a barrier to entry for small investors (if only a psychological one) or do a 5 or 10 for 1 split and bring the unit price down?

Yes but you hit the nail on the head "If you hold the shares for 1 year and then sell". Thing is I don't, otherwise how do you benefit from compounding? I reinvest all my dividends and then hold long term that way you are sometimes buying low, sometimes high, but it all evens out over 10 or so years and my initial stake in BP with dividend reinvestment is the model play, now up 102% in 7 or so years.

I think this will probably be a regular occurrence but past experience indicates that it does not seem to act as a drag on the price for very long.

It was all doom and gloom on here post the Pfizer bid and it settled back into the low £40's for a time. Long may this continue, the only downside being the high unit price.

I use Halifax stocks and shares ISA to automatically reinvest dividends and the charges are minimal. The stamp duty cannot be avoided, but the commission on reinvestment is very low at just under 2%.

Some people have very short memories. June/July 21016 these were sitting at 374p and a rampant buy. It is hardly falling like a stone at the moment just because it has corrected down from a high of 549 back in May. If short term fluctuations in a share are going to spook you to this extent then perhaps you should invest in bonds or stick your money in a fixed term cash ISA? Plus if you reinvested all those dividends at these low prices just wait for it to recover and bingo!

I too tend to ignore the brokers, but surely their recommendations are based on the results of reports passed over to them by sector analysts that they employ to inform their ratings?

This will fluctuate with the POO as it has always done but with 4 x divi payments reinvested in more shares each year it evens out over time. One of my best buy and holds ever and a true testament to the power of compounding. Ditto RDSB. Oh and BP will really get shale production costs down in USA so no worries there either.

Thanks both. That is what these boards are for, all about learning as you go. However, not all are as civilised as this one! I have given up looking at VOD, CNA and LLOY.

I was not referring to Rolls Royce having insurance, but the airlines themselves and particularly those that have aircraft on long term lease? Or do we already know that the £554M includes an amount which will be paid out as compensation for the disruption to airline schedules rather than just covering the actual costs of performing the extra maintenance checks and and any fan blade replacements?

At least the majority of the East Kilbride workforce were redeployed to Inchinnan and not thrown on the scrapheap. RR still pay my mother's widows pension as my old man worked for RR all over the world until he passed away. In a way this is more of a sentimental holding than most.
