(Agence Ecofin) - Faced with the mixed results of its exploration activities, Predator Oil indicated at the end of October 2025 that it planned to sell the Guercif gas prospect, in which it holds 75% of the rights alongside the National Office of Hydrocarbons and Mines (ONHYM).
After a series of mixed results, particularly on its latest drilled well, the British company Predator Oil & Gas Holdings continues to intensify its efforts on this gas project. This is shown in the company's 2025 annual report, published on Thursday, April 30.
The MOU-5 well, drilled in March 2025, did not achieve the expected results, as the geological target was 233 meters deeper than anticipated, beyond the limits of structural closure, according to the report, which specifies that this does not, however, invalidate the potential of the basin. This result follows that of the MOU-4 well, drilled in 2023, which also produced commercially inconclusive results, as reported by Agence Ecofin.
In October 2025, Predator announced its intention to sell its 75% stake in the Guercif license, publicly acknowledging the lack of demonstrated commercial viability after several unsuccessful drilling campaigns.
The company is now negotiating a joint venture agreement with a partner willing to fully fund the drilling of a new well, MOU-6, as well as a gas valorization pilot project. The proposed agreement provides for the reimbursement of up to $24.6 million of past exploration costs, covering wells MOU-1 to MOU-5.
"The company is fully committed to partnering for the potential evaluation and phased development of its gas discovered in the MOU-1 and MOU-3 structures," said Stephen Boldy, the non-executive chairman of the company's board.
A license under pressure and an expanded potential for helium
The first extension period for the Guercif license expires on November 5. Predator must submit an application for a production concession before October 2026 to enter the second period, otherwise it would lose its rights over the 4,301 km² area, according to the annual report.
The net confirmed resources on the priority target TGB-6 are estimated at 61.95 billion cubic feet, while the overall potential of the basin is assessed at 5.9 trillion cubic feet, according to Predator's data.
MOU-5 also opened an unexpected lead. The well revealed an estimated helium potential between 104 and 599 billion cubic feet according to the firm Scorpion Geoscience. "Exploration and development of helium would require a separate regulatory and licensing agreement with ONHYM, through its mining department," the company indicated.
