Wolfiebill, if you sell at a loss and rebuy the same security within a certain period of time (varies by tax regime but somewhere around 30 days) then you cannot use those losses against taxable gains. The rule is an anti-avoidance one to mainly prevent reducing tax liability close to tax period ends, but it exists for the full tax year. One way to deal with it is to buy another similar share instead, eg sell BP at loss and promptly buy SHEL.
