The Government is to buy 200 million tests which can detect Covid-19 in 15 minutes, with experts claiming they could offer a “freedom pass” out of mass restrictions.
Leaked documents reveal that contracts will be awarded next month, after research found that the £5 kits can detect three in four cases of coronavirus in people without any symptoms.
The specifications, seen by The Telegraph, detail plans to secure more than 60 million rapid tests a month from January, with 192 million secured by March.
The documents suggest that they could be used for weekly tests of the 10 per cent of the population at greatest risk from Covid-19.

Government sources said the plans, which form part of the Government’s “moonshot” strategy, could also see the kits used for “mass testing,” which could be rolled out in cities across the country in the coming months.
