Good to see confirmation that, as we suspected, project timelines will be virtually unaffected if GE drop out. Also pleased that CMEC President, Fang Yanshui, contributed to the RNS reaffirming his company’s commitment to the project and making it very clear GE can be replaced in a month I am sure he would love that to happen!

I do not think the Telegraph would have printed such a confident front-page splash without being very confident in their sources within government and it would not surprise me to learn that they had been ‘encouraged’ to produce the story. Negativity abounds at the moment and the prospect of ‘losing’ family Xmas gatherings is worrying many. Now we are hearing that students might not be allowed home.
In the midst of all of this there is increasing talk, as reflected in the DT article, of millions of ‘pregnancy style’ tests being available by December (although other sources are quoted as saying early in the new year is more likely) which will ‘save’ Xmas by enabling individuals to show they are not Covid positive. This is being held out, along with the possibility of a first vaccine for over 65s, as a probable way out of the morass before the end of the year and, as the DT is a pro-Tory leaning publication, I do not think the story has appeared by chance and I certainly think the government sources would have quashed it if it was without foundation. Boris and Matt cannot afford any more ‘false hope’ pronouncements which end up with them being ridiculed.

When I read the article I could not help but ‘see’ the word ‘ Avacta’ jumping out of the page. Only my opinion of course but it seems to me that we are an important part of the solution and that we are likely to have this confirmed fairly soon in order to allow the government to project some positivity at this increasingly challenging time.

I agree, Glenmorangie, there will be so much more to GE’s future direction than a media headline which was quite probably unauthorised in the sense that it was revealed sooner than it should have been and.not accompanied by a clear explanation of future global strategy. GE in all its forms needs to work in different jurisdictions as the world transitions to new forms of energy and in the developing world there is no future in simply withdrawing from its long-term commitment to increasing access to cheap power. If it does others will step in to support governments and as a result will put themselves in the best place to win future renewable energy projects of the sort which GE quite reasonably wants to concentrate on.
It is interesting that nothing further, as far as I am aware, has been said by GE since the change in direction was revealed. I am fairly sure the story will be proved to be correct as a general statement of intent but I equally think the policy will be much more nuanced than it first appeared. I obviously hope that is the case but am not overly concerned either way.

As far as I know the only source we have for GE’s decision is a media report and in that context Glenmorangie’s comments this morning were perhaps very significant. His contact said that the only change in GE’s strategy is their decision no longer to be involved in new-build coal projects in the US and Europe. It is perfectly possible that they have no intention of altering their policies in the rest of the world and for that reason would not have thought of discussing the change with Hanno. There are several semi-autonomous divisions within GE (our link is to GE Africa) and some of them will be unaffected by the new central policy which to me is a good one. The West does not need new coal-fired power stations and can well afford alternatives. This is a luxury not open to countries like Mozambique who have to use their own natural resources, just as we in the west did throughout the industrial revolution. The Tete project is designed to deliver a guaranteed source of baseline power to people who currently only have limited and intermittent access to reliable energy. The Mozambiquan people deserve what we take for granted and that might well be the justification GE will have for continuing to support essential developments across Africa.

I fully expect that GE will stay part of the project but, if they don’t, I remain confident that they will be easily replaced, probably by a Chinese company, and that any delay will be minimal when compared to all the delays we have endured!

Is it fanciful to think that ‘the major global provider of innovative technology and services for the data era’ might also be working with Avacta to provide print-out passports for their saliva antigen test? We have speculated already that Avacta are working on optimising the practicalities of distribution and ease of use as proof of freedom from infection as much as scientific validation so they will be working with data companies.

Hi Chrishutch, I bought a few, but only a few (less than £1K) as a matter of principle! I am comfortable whatever GE’s decision and am pleased that communication with the company is so much better. I believe they are pushing the timescale as much as they can but they are in the hands of government bodies and a very large major in CMEC which has much more to think about than the Tete project. They will be as keen as we are to see the scale and quality of their ‘baby’ reflected in the share price and I remain very confident that we will reap the reward of our patience, perhaps earlier than we feel is likely at the moment.

Of course GE’s decision, if it is confirmed that it will lead to them withdrawing from the project, is annoying and frustrating for all of us who are invested. C’est la vie.

However, what is more important is the role the Tete development will play in the expansion of cheap and reliable power in Mozambique. CMEC are committed, as is the Chinese government, the Mozambiquan government is even more committed - think of the rail link, the 25 year plan etc. Funding is available and we are close to tariff agreement.

As has been said by others CMEC may well be delighted if they can choose a new development partner along with NCCL. They will have far more influence and that will suit them. It does make me wonder even more if they will then move ahead to make an offer for Ncondezi’s share which, if accepted, would allow Hanno and his team to become more involved with GridX.

My final comment is that I do not believe Hanno was aware of the impending announcement by GE and I suspect there have been harsh exchanges since as he tries to clarify the position.

I think we will hear quite a lot from Hanno in the next few days and I imagine he and his colleagues will have been aware of the GE strategic decision for some time and factored it in to the overall plan if necessary. However, I think we will be told it remains all systems go.

Hi G-G-G, I don’t see this as a major problem. GE are not an equity partner in the Tete project and one of the reasons could be that they will have known for some time that they intend to move away from coal. It is CMEC who are the major players now and in essence GE are just a supplier and installer of the boiler, steam turbine, generator and emission control systems. Tete is. It a GE project. They have announced that they no longer plan to develop and operate coal mines but I am reasonably confident that this decision will have been a long time in the making and will not affect their agreement to supply and instal what they have already agreed to. I hope I am right and I am not worried although I too have a lot of shares in NCCL, albeit not to the same extent as you. Even if I am wrong and GE need to be replaced I imagine CMEC will remain committed and I have no doubt that there are Chinese companies who could step in. Remember too that the Chinese government is backing the project, as are the Mozambiquan authorities who see the project as an important element in their 25 year plan to bring reliable power to the country.

Yes, exactly that. I try to keep an eye on companies which are small, unloved and have attracted the attention of significant investors who, I tend to assume, have a plan to make good returns. I was fortunate to discover VELA a couple of weeks ago and the £1K is a small proportion of my profit to date. I think VELA is primed for something special if you haven’t researched it. Not much more than a shell at the moment but has a sizeable war chest, very experienced new leadership in James Normand and a clear strategy to invest in disruptive technology. I am not trying to influence you either way but I have always valued tips from others with similar philosophies!
