A matter of attitude26 Apr 2019 23:02
Oof. Soon going to be time to join my little late-night poker tournament. But (despite not being a woman) I'm capable of 'multitasking', which in this case has involved skimming through today's posts here (or at least, some of them), and at the same time watching a movie. An old videotape (yes, I've kept them) playing on my old video cassette player (kept that as well).
The movie is an ancient thing from 1982, but an old favorite. Called 'Who Dares Wins', which is of course the motto of the SAS. It was a very popular movie at the time because of a certain patriotism reigning then due to a conflict over 'ownership' of the Falkland Islands. Some people here might be too young to remember that: myself I was working as Assistant Driller on the N.Sea Montrose Alpha platform back then, and we were glued to the TV news about the 'war' whenever possible.
Some other young people here might not even know where the Falklands are. I suggest they google 'Rockhopper' and the 'Sealion Field'. A good google search with cross-reference, might even explain what the fighting was really all about. Yup. Not just a few sheep-farms and national pride, but also that nasty stuff, oil.
That movie's a good contrast to the tree-hugging stuff recently posted here, and the fear portrayed in the name of 'environmentalism'. Plus also the fear of 'risk' shown by one particular poster, with his sanctimonious warnings that we should hedge our bets and stuff like that.
Which I find sad and somewhat pitiful, really. A sign of the times.
'Who Dares Wins'. It's a good motto. And although I've never served in the military, it's a motto which has in some ways ruled my life for decades. And certainly does regarding my Hurricane investment, the quantity of which is nobody else's business but mine. I'm not 'all in' with HUR, but my 'portfolio' is heavily weighted that way.
Talking of 'all-in', I've got a poker game to join. And if I make the final table (as is often the case), I'll doubtless have to go 'all-in' more than once if I'm going to finish in the top five (where the money really is), or even better, finish in first place.
'Who Dares Wins'.
And tough luck for the sheep.
